    Counter-strike: Source

    As I'm sure you'll be happy to know: GameHavoc will be hosting the beta. I have recieved word that the Linux SDS (Source Dedicated Server, for now. VALVe refers to it as Source HLDS as well. Not sure which is official.) is already available for CS:S and I will be working on it throughout the day, learning how its setup, etc. I have also recieved some basic performance stats as well. Another operator who has already tested the server found that an empty CS:S server used 0% CPU and 43megs of RAM. This is great, considering CS1.6 uses about 0.3-1.0% CPU even when empty, and more than 85megs of RAM. We'll see how it holds up with players soon enough!

    From what I've seen so far, the file system has been laid out quite a bit differently from the old HLDS. There's definately pieces that resemble the STEAM client's file system. It also looks like SDS includes a method of downloading custom content, possibly even compressed as zips, as it has a "downloads" folder. I would assume such content would go there, similar to http://www.gamehavoc.com/content1 for the CS 1.6 server.

    The beta seems to build the file system for the entire game, even though it only downloads the content necessary for dust. I see evidence that at the very least, these maps have been ported: cs_havana, cs_italy, cs_militia, cs_office, de_aztec, de_cbble, de_chateau, de_dust, de_piranesi, de_prodigy,

    The installation hints that bots are available in the full version, which makes since considering the excellent bot AI that exists in CZ.

    I know im excited and I dont even play CS1.6 anymore, but being an original fan of CS I can say it will be interesting to see it on Source, even though its just a simple facelift.

    I imagine its more than a facelift. Even if they tried to mimic CS 1.6 exactly, its a totally different engine and things are gonna be much better, such as recoil, long distance shots, HOPEFULLY netcode, etc. All the stuff ThriKreen likes to complain about

    Oh im sure they will fix those things too, but I mean content wise I dont expect many new things. I WOULD like to see new weapons, and a different style of play would be great too.

    Naw. I disagree on that. It wouldn't be counter-strike then. I'd like to see a BIT of weapon balancing, but otherwise leave it alone. With the famas and galil added (Or whatever their new 'happy american don't corrupt the children' names are), things have a pretty wide sprectrum, though maybe another machine gun or two might be interesting.

    As for the gameplay, CS is meant to have a realistic "setting" but a more loosely defined gameplay. Its Team Deathmatch, in the end.

    I'd like it to stay that way, I have other games I can play, such as JO, if I want more realism. Both have their merits, and at different times I want to play different games.

    BTW, not to compete with ferret but... I will have a source server running also. In fact it is being loaded right now.

    I just would like to see at least one femfatal in there. That was rather cool to see in JO demo, that they have one in they list of models to choose from. Now to convince my husband to buy it. Or I might have to get it with my b-day moneys in Oct. Weee. But I look forward in playing some cs-s with ya guys.

    How did you get around the fact that it won't recognize the game type "cstrike"? I've tried the STEAM title for the game as well, "Counter-Strike Source"

    The srcds_run script needs some altering as well, because if it triggers an autoupdate on crash, it provides STEAM with the game type "cstrike" and starts downloading CS 1.6 .. Needs to be forced to download "Counter-Strike Source".

    Of course, srcds_run is only a Linux issue, I don't know which OS you're using Windows always gets the attention first

    i am using linux and am having no update problems when i start srcds_run. here i will post what i get. It is long sorry.

    Interesting. Did it start on 27016 on its own? I wonder if they shifted the default port up so it wouldn't conflict with HLDS out of the box. It seems to have ignored the +IP as well.

    Very similar to CZ:

    I begin to wonder if CZ got its AI from HL2, rather than being an independant project.

    I'd ignore the other errors, probably due to only half the game content being available.

    As for updating, neither do I, if I do it manually. But if you tell srcds_l to -autoupdate and give it user/pass, it runs:
    ./steam -command update -game cstrike

    Should run:
    ./steam -command update -game "Counter-strike Source"

    Interesting. Problem somewhat resolved.. If you don't specific the map, de_dust, it won't recognize the game type. Anti-piracy measure?

    Now it can't determine my CPU frequency :P
