Looking at a DVD Drive, i was looking at the NEC that does dual layering through newegg for like $80, thoughts?

I have the non-dual layer NEC, and it performs FLAWLESSLY. AFAIK, the only difference is the dual layer capability, and I can actually flash my drive using a hacked rom to burn dualies... I just have no use for them because I only burn DVDs to watch on my bigscreen, and no commercial players read this hack-standard just yet.

did you get the nd-1300a or the 2500a?

i hope you got the 8x one. i wish it was available when i bought mine 4x is good but i hate waiting 15 minutes to burn a full dvd. im very impatient.

i cant wait till they make 16x burners then i can burn a dvd as fast as a cd @ 52x.

Lite-On has a 16x burner, but I believe it only does DVD+R at that speed. DVD-R is still 8x, though they claimed a firmware upgrade later on would fix that.

15 minutes for a DVD? Thats like, 6+ gig. I remember waiting 60 minutes to burn 1 song on our old old old 1994 pc with a cd burner at 2x.

dvd's hold approximately 4.37 gigs including the overhead for the file table.

i dont know about dual layer.

it takes me appoximately 15minutes to burn a dvd filled to the brim in DOA i have an nec nd-1300a. Some people burn faster some slower. but on avg every burner that burns at 4x to a standard 4.37gb disc takes ~13 - 15 minutes to burn.

yes i do know that they say 4.7gb on the disc. and 700mb cd-r's say they hold 700mb but when was the last time you ever put exactly 700.00mb on a cd?

I discovered this as well, when it wouldn't let me burn 4.4gigs of anime on to one disk. They did the same thing HDD manufactures do. Its not true gigabytes, ie, 1024 megabytes, but 1000 megabytes (Which aren't 1024 kilobytes, but 1000 kilobytes, and so forth)

So 4.7gigs to them is 1000000000 bytes, not 1073741824 bytes

Great drive, I have it and have burned movies with it. I need to still figure out how to get Nero to burn 8x dvd-rs though. For the time being ill have to use DVDDecryptor/DVDShrink.

Nero doesnt actually support the drive yet... they should sooner or later... the entire DL doesnt really appeal too heavily to me... i just got the drive *with* DL because i wanted to make my purchase future resistant, plus it was only a few bucks more.

It burns at 4X which is good enough for the forseeable future

Well Ive been using DVDDecryptor to do my burning now anyways and I was gonna try RecordNow DLX. However, last night I changed the firmware on my drive and it no longer reads any dvds. When I get home ill have to play with it some more to put the original firmware back on their.
