Okay...

You guys are all into this kind of thing, so:

amd xp2000+ 1.67gHz

A: How much can I overclock this thing?
B: How much do I adjust voltage and fsb in BIOS to force these changes?
C: What kind of HSF do I need to keep it cool enough to OC?

A: Not a whole lot :P
B: Voltage no higher than 1.7 VCORE. FSB as high as it'll go and still boot Windows :P Probably won't get above 150mhz
C: A big one :P Seriously. Is that a Palomino or Thoroughbred. Runs a lot hotter than Bartons.

!= barton

What kind of performance increase, if any, will I see out of this?

Depends on how high you can get. If you've got PC2100 RAM, overclocking the FSB isn't going to help you all that much. That's why I have PC3500. 434mhz RAM, my FSB is 210 so 420mhz for the RAM.

Nevermind then.

Guess I'll nab one of them barton 3000... and some pc3500 ram.

Nab a barton 2500. Costs $50-60 less, overclocks just as well. ORDER SOON, THESE CHIPS ARE OUT OF PRODUCTION NOW

They'll work on any board that supports the athlon xp line, right?

Er. No. Go get the A7N8X. I can gaurentee at least 2250mhz and a 410+ FSB.

Athlon 2500 - $85
A7N8X - $85
1gig of Mushkin PC3500 - $218

Go get it, set the vcore to 1.725 and the FSB to 210. Done. 2300mhz, 420mhz RAM

Good recommendation ferret, what I would have said. Also, glad to see you've joined the elightened in promoting the muskin name. With that system and the memory canon will be very happy (cheap upgrade and huge performance increase). Lets just hope he has a DX9 video card.

ya it works DX9 fine, however it is not a DX9 card. I believe, and anyone correct me if im wrong, that the GeForce-ti4200s were built on the DX8 API. Also, the newer FX5700 and above cards and ATI 9700 and above cards are 256-bit and support upto 8 pipes to the GPU. Id say if after you upgrade you CPU/Mobo/Memory you still see slow downs in games maybe look at upgrading. If it is fine for the time being, save up some cash and wait for the new video cards to lower in price in say Sept./Oct.

Edit:
Oh and dont buy anything below a GeForce FX 5900XT or a ATI 9800Pro if you plan to purchase. Also, a 5950U == 9800Pro in most benchies.

I have the parts I described above, the A7N8X/2500/Muskin .. With my GF3, I run Joint Ops with no lag at 1024x768 with Normal detail levels across the board. Not bad if I do say so myself.

Fear my GeForce3

The card I just demoted to my server case since I bought a new LeadTek 5900XT. Lets me run JointOps @ 1280x1024 with high everything. ~30fps

There we go then, he shouldnt need to upgrade. Im excited to hear how the upgrade goes and to see what sort of perforamce improvements he gets.

it'd be better if you upgraded to the pc3200 value ram. extra bus speed helps a lot.

Seriously. If you boost the FSB to 200 with the ram still running at 166, you aren't gonna see that great a boost in performance.
