wtf, man?

I've used my scanner before... since I formatted and installed winxp home, I've downloaded all ms updates.

Now that I've installe dmy scanner, everytime I run hp precision scan pro it say "the scanner could not be initialized. scanner not found."

Now, windows recognized that a usb device was connected before I installed the hp software. Wtf could be going wrong here?

the USB cable could be messed up. or the port...

The cable is fine too.

A few things you could try...
----------------
Reinstalling your mobo's usb drivers.
----------------
Uninstall the scanner software, shutting down, unplugging the cable, reboot, plug it back in to a different port.
---------------
Take it out and shoot it.

What I've done at this point:

> Totally formatted the HD and installed win xp home.
> Downloaded all XP updates and new drivers.
> Updated to the latest mobo bios from msi.
> Downloaded all new usb drivers for the mobo.
> Downloaded and installed latest drivers for the scanner.

Nah... the thing turns on... the bulb lights up... all the LEDs indicate functionality. And I've had this thing working not too long ago.

I spent like $300 on it when I bought it so it pisses me off that it's not working.

Alright...

> windows xp recognizes that a usb device is attached to the computer.
> Installed the driver/software combo for the device
> the unrecognized usb device still shows as having no drivers installed for it
> The installed software does not recognize the scanner... and reports "scanner could not be initialized. scanner not found.

to me it sounds like the motherboard USB isnt working correctly. You have Windows XP (has native USB support), you have a working scanner, and working drivers. Only problem can be the USB device on your mobo. Id say make sure you have latest drivers for your mobo.

The scanner isn't working on either the integrated usb 1.1(1.0?) ports or the pci-usb 2.0 ports.

I've updated the via chipset usb drivers... but none of the updates have anything to do with usb 1.1(1.0?).

When you install the scanner drivers, is the scanner itself plugged in or disconnected?

There is nothing so infinitely frustrating & relieving... than to fix a problem without remembering having done anything differently.

Anyhow... it works now. Cheers, and thanks!

have a scanjet 5400 or something at home... and it gets not found similar to what you described. I have to shutdown the scanner, and the computer. Then turn the scanner on first and then boot up the machine. Its either that or completely remove all the drivers/software for it, and reinstall the driver/software. It took me a couple time to realize that shutting down the machine and powering up the scanner before the cpu would fix it... really flakey stuff.
