Well, you wanted opinions ferret, here's my two cents.

I feel that the editing option should be removed from the debate forum. Maybe that will help curb the offhand comments and make people actually think before they hit the submit button. To say the least, it becomes difficult to follow an arguement. I use edit to fix any typos or add something I had forgotten, but what I have to say stays. It's hard to have an argument based on someone's words when they can just turn around and remove or edit a previous entry.

Again, just a thought.

BREAK!!!

Alternative. Replace the edit with a clearly shown "append". It would appear like a quote underneath your original post, and contain any extra things you want to say.

On the other phpBB forums that I participate in, you cannot edit posts after somebody has posted after you. That seems to be the best of both worlds. Sometimes I forget to doublecheck after clicking submit, and reedit my post right then and there. Of course this adds problems with sticky threads or threads where you want to summarize the entire thread in the first post (such as a who's coming to this event thread).
