Im upgrading my video card now, but I know i will need to do it again for HL2 launch, which is why i went with a cheaper card for now. The reason im going to upgrade my harddrive also is because the I have now i think just isnt that great. Its a maxtor and im just not happy with its performance (regardless of HL2 or not it was getting upgraded in the fall at some pt)

Not sure on my vote right now. I believe I could run it without upgrades, though I'd be at a lower resolution and medium detail levels at best.

My current PC:
1.4ghz Athlon Thunderbird
512megs of DDR PC2100
2x 60gig 7200rpm 8mb cache HDDs (One Maxtor, One IBM)
8x Dual Mode DVD burner from Pioneer
Asus GeForce 3 Deluxe

... Decent even by today's standards but starting to fall short. I'm pondering spending the $50 to find and pick up an Athlon-XP 2100+, since that's the highest chip my motherboard will support, but haven't decided yet. Its only $50 though, so even if the performance gain isn't much it won't exactly burn up my bank accounts. Maybe get a Radeon 9600 Pro, they're not too expensive either. Anything higher would probably be a waste since the board is 4x AGP and 266mhz FSB.

Plus upgrading would give me the spare parts to build my dad a new PC, the best he has is some old 315mhz K6/2 system that I put together years ago ;P I'd just need to find a motherboard, HDD, and a stick of RAM and he'd be set. Well. A case would probably help.

No i am not upgradeing. FarCry worked fine. and HL2 min specs are far less then FarCry's. I have seen the min specs and it is something to the affect of 733mhz, 256mb ram and a 64mb video card. I have doubal of all that so i figure i am fine plus i am not going to be playing with everything maxed.

Im probably going to get an extra 512 ram, and MAYBE buy another graphics card. I have a radeon 9200 128MB right now, we'll see how that runs, I may swap up to something newer.

HD is fine, 120GB WD with the 8MB cache.

Where's the, "after spending $50 on a game, I'm gonna spend $200 on accessories just to play that one game"?

I'll be able to run it without the fancy stuff, which will be fine for the next couple years before I need a full system upgrade.

Ferret you should upgrade that motherboard and cpu first.

Ferret you should upgrade that motherboard and cpu first.

I'll probably just upgrade the CPU for a little boost, found some benchmarks today and quite a few of them show a fairly decent boost between the 1.4 and the 2100+. $50 is easier to spend than $150+

you might as well just buy the 2500 then unless you plan on getting a athlon64 later on...

AMD athlonXP 2000+ 1.67gHz
512 DDR PC2100
50gb 5400rpm maxtor hd
nVidia GeForce ti-4200 128mb DDR
40x cd-r/rw

Suggestions?

I'm thinking that I might just get a whole new system... and put linux on the older one...

Canon: i have
amd xp 2500+ (burton core) best AMD core for 32bit
1gig ddr pc3200 ram
7200rpm ram
ti-4200 128ddr vid card

and i do not plan to upgrade for HL2. My puter handled farcry just fine. A slow down here and ther but all and all just fine. HL2's recomended specs are not nearly as high as Farcrys.

and if you plan to do any major upgrades like buying a new pc. you may want to wait for pci express and crads to come out for it. PCI express is going to wipe the floor with agp. So if you have the money to go all out i would wait a little bit.

as for suggestions. Toss in another 512ram and if you mobo can handle it toss in a faster chip. Both are under 100 bucks.
