Ok, I got my new hard drive today. It is a Western Digital 120 Gig 7200 RPM 8MB Buffer. I formated it as all 1 partition and started installing windows. I took about 4 hours to get to the point where is almost finished, but it stopped moving so I decided to restart (which was probably a bad decision). So, I try again... its not going any faster. I turn it off and change the jumper settings from cable select to single. Reformate and install, same problem. I put it back on cable select (the default setting), and try again. Same problem. It is going MUCH slower than I have ever seen it go and I have installed Windows XP A LOT of times. It may be a bad hard drive, maybe my CPU is to hot to do it any faster despite an old aftermarket thermaltake heatsink/fan which is running at the same temp as before - a few degrees, around 138. It may even be a bad motherboard thats just to old to handle a 120 gig hard drive. I have NO idea and would like some help if possible before XP finishes installing. So, you have about 5 hours.
HD - Western Digital 120 Gig 7200 RPM 8MB Buffer
CPU - AMD Athlon XP 2000+
Fan - Thermaltake Heatsink/Fan (not sure of the model though. it is kinda old)
Mobo - Epox 8KHA+

So let me get this right, you have installed XP on this computer many times without any problems, and the hardware configuration hasn't changed since the last installation besides getting the new hard drive?
Did you add this hard drive, or replace the old one?

i am replacing the old one. the only other thing that i changed was my old CPU (AMD Athlon XP) and the old stock heatsink/fan for my bro's CPU (same thing) and a better heatsink/fan (which actually isnt much better...)

ok, it finished installing drivers, installing network, and copying files. now is says completing instalation and the progress bar has stopped. It is actually part of the copying files progress bar. once it is about 5/6 of the way done, it goes to completing installation and doesnt move... it does NOT freeze, it just wont continue.

ok, good news... it got past that one part after about 20 min and is now installing start menu items. i think everything is going to be ok. hopefully this isnt a sign of how my comp will be running...

i know xp is slow installing, but never this slow. I started the install at 6:00 pm and it didnt finish until 3:30 this morning. I still havent even gotten windows to load yet because it is taking SO long. I will exchange for another hard drive today to see if I just happened to get a bad hard drive. This is what happened before my old harddrive died. My computer started going incredibly slow and it finally just quit. SO, hopefully when i exchange harddrives, the one I get will be good. If it does the same thing, then I will buy a new mobo cuz mine is pretty slow and is already messed up (doesnt read the floppy).

read my reply to your post about the cpu cache.. that's most likely the cause for the slow install
