been fiddling around with stuff i want to upgrade/repair with a few computers i have lying around.
i was going to bump my stuff from my gaming computer and throw in a few upgrades, and trickle down the rest.
so far it looks like:

hard drive - 80gb samsung sata @ 7200rpm w/ 8mb cache | 8.9ms seek for $78
motherboard - abit an7 nforce2 ultra 400 for $99
processor - amd athlon xp 3200+ barton with 400mhz fsb, 512k l2 | retail (fan + heatsink) for $187

i'll probably have to get a few smaller upgrades in the future, but any suggestions around those lines?

From newegg, you can get a MSI KGN7 Delta-L mainboard and an athlon 2500 (which overclocks very nicely to 3200) for about 130 for the two.

That's what I did.

How do you over clock a CPU? I have an 2600 XP that I run at 2.086mhz :(

its an AMD chip, therefore the clock rating is the 'similair to an Intel of this speed' rating. The true speed is usually lots slower.

Check out your mainboards bios for tweaking the speed. I do not recommend it thought, it drastically shorterns the life of your PC. I expect my PCs to last a minimum of 5 years.

I just got a samsung 160 gig sata for $114.. haven't used it yet as I want to get everything organized and backed up before I put the OS and everything on it, but it's my first experience with a samsung drive. They seem to get pretty good reviews though.
