Not as cutting edge? I can't think of one game out which has graphics anywhere near the techdemos, or the demo of Counter-strike 2. Warcry looks a bit cartoony, and the play is crap, Painkiller has awesome physics, but that's more quake-twitchy so the weapons are all flashy and bad guys VERY cartoony.

Seen Farcry? Pretty close in detail levels and such, and damn good AI.

Meant Farcry, not Warcry. Warcry = crappy team-based RTS/FPS, Farcry = crappy FPS. I didn't like it at all, and the AI was crap. On the highest difficulty, you'd get headshotted instantly walking around corners, etc. That's not a learning curve, unless if by curve they were intending exponentially.

Where's the choice for "I'll buy it when it comes out, and I'm sure it'll be awesome technically and artistically, but after all the delays, I'm not waiting eagerly for every bit of info about the game and I won't be waiting at the store before it opens so I can be the first one and I'll be lucky if I get it before the first set of price cuts"?

SK has it right on the money though, Far Cry, while visually impressive, as will Doom3 and Unreal 3's engine, still leaves much to be desired in the game play. One can make a FPS that does more, like Deus Ex's, without resorting to the same level grind, get key, exit level bit.

While HL2's engine graphics do look a bit dated compared to say, Unreal3's, at least it won't require a 5ghz machine and a 6800. And from what I've seen of the atmosphere of HL2, it will undoubtly be better even if the graphics aren't up to par.

I think that's why a lot of computer video games are getting a lackluster approach nowadays, while a lot of the focus is on consoles (Microsoft's deep pockets nonewithstanding). They can explore different gameplay modes without having publishers thinking computers are the realm of FPS and RTS games simply because both usually require a mouse to play in the most effective style.

i think painkiller and HL2 use the same physics engine. HL2 uses the havoc physic engine. There is a tech demo of the engine and it looks like a hell of a lot of fun to mess with.

I think i'm getting apathetic about new games in general... I get my self built up and wanting something, and then they push it back and back.. and it loses it's sparkle. i'll probably pick it up at some point after it's release, but i wont be camping out the evening before so i can pick it up at 8:00 AM.

I still need to pick up Unreal Tournament 2004... it's rather cool.

I still will want it, but i wont care about having it the day it's released. i'll probably pick it up at some point after it's release, when i'm walking through the store, and go.. "hey, half life 2, i should get that."

I just beat No One Lives Forever (yes the first one) and I loved it for the same reason despite running on a terrible game engine. It doesn't look good (didn't look great even when it came out), but it's damn fun to play. You got fun missions, great story, amazing (i.e. funny) dialog, etc. It also provides the best reason to go covert on missions: by sneaking up on enemies, you get to hear them talking to each other, my favorite topic being a goon talking about how much he'd like to kill his mother-in-law, but feels that'll but a slight strain on his marrige.

You got it, less shooting and more everything else - NPC interaction, sneaking around, what have you. Just to add flavour.

Yawn .. anyone spot FarCry coming before it appeared on the shelves ? I didn't and I expect the same to happen when HL2 finally arrives. Lots of new stuff to make it look dated and sluggish .. I actually rather enjoyed Chaser myself .. that was about a year before PainKiller and what not. Looked great, played cool... best nade and flash bang effects I ever experienced as well
