I'm about to be purchasing 1 or 2 sata drives, and since i've never had any experience with them, i've got a question. Would it make any sense to just install the games on an sata drive but leave the OS on an IDE drive? When programs load, would it matter that the OS is still on a slow drive, or does it just run straight off the sata drive?

Disk reads and I/O in general is expensive, and when it comes to loading levels and things that will be done nearly entirely from the game's program file folder, it makes little difference where the OS is installed. You could leave the OS on a normal IDE drive and when it comes to gaming it won't really make a difference.

awesome, thank you.
i'll just go ahead and buy one sata, and use one of my existing ones for windows.

Or if you get a large drive you could partition it, and put windows on one partition and the games on another, and run everything from the sata drive.

ill let u know that my 36 gb wd raptor 10 k rpm is alot faster on booting to windows
doing cs movies
big difference overall
what i did was basically ghosted my c drive to my sata
change the boot.ini to point to the new drive with my image c drive
and edited the registry for my default path for program files so it dont load off c
im gonna get another one sometime b 4 lan and raid my shit so it dont crash like always
i always get a ****ing bad blue screen at lans never fails
works like a charm
