The only time I have gotten this error is during HL. My comp locks up and then shortly after says:
The instruction a "0x0ac15969" referenced memory at "0x0aedfcf8". The memory could not be "read".
Click OK to terminate the program.
---------
Ok, so does anyone have any idea what this mean?

The instruction stored at "0x0ac15969" (Some memory address on your computer, not really code stuff) tried to use memory located at the address "0x0aedfcf8" .. And for some reason, it couldn't :P
This could be a number of things, but most likely a general protection fault type deal. Basicly, it tried to use memory that didn't belong to it, at which point your operating system steps in, says nono, and kills the program.
Or your RAM could be bad, but I would think it was a problem with address space or a bad array that tried to use unallocated memory. ;)

There's a utility called memtest I believe.. I don't have the link for it now, but you could google it and you should be able to find it.
This might be of help:

np.. just to warn you, it takes a really really long time to run.. I kinda gave up cause I was impatient at the time and cancelled it, and just went to cleaning the RAM.. which worked. Although I cleaned everything else in the comp, as well.. so it could have been anything.

well, you should have just read the manual. You run it for however long you want. it NEVER "finishes" you stop it when you want. It said you can run it until it gets to 100%, run it for an hour, or run it over night (which I did). I just ended mine at 11596% with 0 errors which is good i dont have to replace my RAM, but its still one of serveral other things. I am already looking into buying a new case (to keep EVERYTHING cool), new mobo (error might be with that), new power supply (possibly an error with that, new processor (maybe errorous), and a new heatsink/fan to keep from overheating.

well, I am still getting the error, so I am beginning to think it is a mobo issue. I have only gotten the error during cs, but my comp has froze while on the internet and in HL before. I will try a fresh instal of HL and see if I still get the error though.

ok, well... i had a few corrupt files and could even get windows to start up so i had to reformat. I think I may have a bad hard drive cuz sometimes it wouldnt let me reformat/install windows because of a corrupt partition. SO i dont know yet.

heh.. I'm too lazy to read the manual.. and cleaning everything fixed the problem, so waiting for it to finish would have been kinda useless.
Did you check out that other article on troubleshooting RAM?

there isnt a problem with my RAM. I did that MemTest 2 different nights and it never found a problem

i get a similar error in cs, it seems to always happen when i kill someone with an impossible shot. like ill be running away and shooting and ill get a headshot on a guy through a wall then the sound starts stuterring and the game crashes. i get a memory error, but i check the cs forum at forum planet and it seems to be some cs error a buncha people are having where the sound loops as freezes the computer. my sound used to loop and lock up the computer before. now on a fresh install it doesnt loop and freeze the computer anymore it just handles the exception and closes hl.exe .
i dont know if theyre related but it seems like an error valve knows about and put in the exception handling as a temporary solution till they can fix it for good.

ewww .. nasty have you tried shutting down all other background applications, hacks, instant message services ? The bug might be in another application (written in C and trashing memory it shouldn't cause C is nice like that. N00bs who write hacks don't have the support a commercial product does which get tested and these issues detected very quickly by skilled testers)
I'm not saying you hack, I'm just saying, thre are that many hacks out there that Counter Strike issues like that are usually the due to some other augmentation application coming along and trying to intercept things to aid the player going horribly wrong (Steam updates can sometimes make the game incompatible with these, which is another reason not to bother with anything passed some hacking in the console to change settings).
Ok, off that thread, just delete CS and the cache and restart steam, it will repopulate the files with fresh ones.
Note: if your RAM is getting hawt, it can also make it wibble like that. What RAM do you have? The faster it is, the more tempramental it gets
