Everybody thought thottbot was some nerd's gift back to the community of WoW. In reality, it's possibly a marketing tool designed by IGE to set prices, and garnish economy data without having to do surveys, etc. Interesting article follows below:

They farm the info to see what items are high in demand / short in supply to mass hunt and introduce a shortage in said item(s) to force people to buy it from them, because you won't be able to get it any other way.

Holy hell that's ****ed up. Too bad I don't buy into the mmorpgs...
its hard to say because i thought thott was sombody else than ign.
Errrrrrrrr..
Thott is Afterlife's guild leader, one of the best guilds that played Everquest and now a big guild in World of Warcraft.
Some guy made a software/website like that for Everquest, called Lucy that sniffed data from Everquest and put it on the website for everyone's use. Like what spells did in reality, what effects did, etc..
Now, Thott had friends from Everquest. His friends, Furor and Tigole(they were guild leaders for the 2 best guilds in Everquest back in the day), are both working for Blizzard now. So they let him create his website and gave him the knowledge on how to sniff data from World of Warcraft and update it for his website.
Giving infos to IGE and other sites like that *could* be possible, but that's highly improbable.
