Something that some of you may not know about me is that I am a closet musician. I started my interest in drums and percussion instruments in general when I was about 11 years old. I started with snare drum lessons, moved on to xylophone (which was really fun as a 5th grader), played the tympani (kettle drums) all through high school and even attended All-State competition a couple times. I was in a drum and bugle corps for a couple summers where I played the 'triple-toms', which represents probably the best memories of my teenaged years.
I began playing the drum (trap) set when I was about 12. My mom paid for a few months of lessons at a local university and then she got remarried and we moved away. She bought me my first kit shortly thereafter and things have never been the same since. My friends and I stated a rock band during my senior year. We were named "Tyrant" and we worked our asses off to get 5 or 6 songs down. These were typical hits of the day from the likes of Night Ranger, Twisted Sister and Boston. We opened at a school assembly and brought down the house. I was instantly star-struck.
From that day forward, I have been convinced that I would never be truly happy unless I was playing the drums in front of an audience. Sadly, it was 20 years ago when I was that high school senior. Outside of a few 'sit-ins' with this band or that, my dream has never been realized.
Until now...
I've had a drum kit of my own ever since I began playing. I would carry it with me everywhere I moved to and there it would sit - occationally getting set up and dusted off. I might even bang on them for a little while, but nothing consistent. Last spring I was in the garage and I regarded them for a long time. I asked myself if I was ever going to do something with these things or was it time to give up the hobby, sell them and gain a little storage space. I decided to give it one more try and proceded to place an ad and brief bio on a website called GigFinder (http://www.gigfinder.com/index.shtml). I really didn't expect tro get much - if any - response.
It took a couple months, but I got 3...
The first was a group playing 50's and 60's rock-a-billy type stuff. I'll play most anything, but this was a little out of my league, so I passed. The second was a near miss, but didn't pan out. The third however, was the charm. I hooked up with these guys in August and we've been playin' together ever since. The music is kind of a fusion between rock, country and southern genres. We play about a 50/50 spilt of originals and covers. Covers are from anyone from Wilson Pickett and Keith Urban to The Eagles and Stevie Ray Vaughan. The originals are very well composed tunes written by our guitarist. He's got a real knack for it.
So after almost 6 months of practice, losing a bassist, finding a bassist, losing our lead guitarist, hunting for another lead guitarist - and not finding one, deciding that we will make due - for the time being - with only one guitar, miscellaneous colds and flu's, incompatible work schedules, and the holidays.... we've managed to pull together a bit of a set list.
And now...
We have our first gig! Well, we've been invited to open for another local band named "Full Throttle" at a club called "MVP's" here in Raliegh, NC. It will only be about 7 of our best songs, but it will allow us to get our feet wet, see how we feel and sound on stage and get our name out there.
I'm hoping that anyone who lives in this area will come out to suppport us. I will be lassoing a few friends of mine, but it would be great to see Pickoff, Yolkfolk and Zantas (are you old enough?).
I have long since beaten down the delusions of grandeur about the platinum selling album and the world tour complete with t-shirts. But it sure would be great to be playing on the local circuit a couple nights a month.
I am so excited! I think a little pee just came out!

How did this go?We are playing this Friday night at MVP's in Raleigh. We've been practicing our asses off for the past two weeks to get the seven songs we're going to play as perfect as possible. Since they are all original pieces (well, all but one) I suppose no one will know if we mess it up, right? No one but us, that is. I guess that's the point.
We're all real proud of what we've accomplished this far and can't wait to see how it will be received by the public.
I will be having the show recorded on digi-camcorder and will post a sample if anyone wants to see.

Well, we played as scheduled on Friday night . It was the most fun I've had in ages, and I'm definitely hooked all over again. It's like crack or heroin. can't wait for my next fix.
We went on at about 9pm in this little club, packed to the doors with about 100 people. The smoke was almost unbearable (speaking as someone who is 3 weeks without a cigarette). Our set lasted for a little over 30 minutes. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Even had a few folks singing along at the end - which is something as these were originals that no one has heard before.
I've got the entire show recorded on digi tape. When I get it converted to DVD, I'll post some clips up here.
So what's in store for the future? Well, so far we've been booked for a similar gig as the 'feature band' in April. A fellow musician in attendance has envited us to participate in at least 2 local festivals this spring. And the club owner of MVP's stated that once we've got at least 3 full sets of music, we're as good as booked.
You know what they say... Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it!

As promised, here's a few clips of last Friday night's show. The file sizes are a bit large - ranging from 60 MB to 115MB - so dl at your own risk! Bear in mind, it's not the best of recordings - however it came out a bit better than I thought it would. It's a bit 'tinny' due to the cymbals and the mics are a little muddy. Aslo, we were kinda poorly mixed and the only instrument miced up was the drums. Anyway, enough excuses....
This was our opener (68.4MB)

Congratz DVP, looks like things are really taking off for you guys. The timing also couldn't be better, now that you guys have your feet wet the summer will be great for you guys, there's always tons of oportunities in the summer.
I suggest if you and your band can get the time/money find a decent price studio and record 4-6 songs for a demo CD. I did it with my band and it was blast, not as much fun as playing live, but it was still a great (and occasionally frustrating) time.
Good luck man, and keep on rockin

UPDATE!!
WCB will be performing at MVP's in Raleigh, NC this Thursday night. It is 'Open Mic Nite' at MVP's but we have been invited as the "feature band". In other words, we will be performing for anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. The rest will only be on for one song each. This is a very popular event in the area, so it's kind of a big deal.
Our set list has almost tripled since our last outing in February so picking out 45 minutes of our best material will be difficult. Our goal is to be actually playing a paying gig by June. Shouldn't be too difficult at this rate.

Last night's show went off better than the rest! We seem to be clicking better and batter with every outing. After we were done, we went outside to get a breath of fresh air and the owner basically accosted us at the door. He wanted to know - in a nutshell - how much we charged for a night. David (our singer) stated that in reality we hadn't charged anything yet as we were still trying to get our name out there. He then said, "Let me rephrase the question. When do you want your Friday night gig?" We were speachless. Our goal is now to be ready to fly solo by June 17th.
On our way to our vehicles, another guy stopped us asking if we had a biz card (we don't yet). He throws a lot of big parties and always has live music. He said he would definitely be giving us a call. Then he and his friend climbed into their Porche and Corvette and drove off.
30 minutes on stage got us 2 gigs. Not too shabby! Our website and marketing literature is in developement now.
This thread is scheduled to be moved to "Livin' the Dream" soon.

Ok, I've still got wood! \:D/
Last Friday we played a benefit (also known as 'we don't get paid' #-o)for Relay for Life. it's a cancer research fund drive that is held pretty much everywhere for those who don't know. This is the fourth year they've held it in this particular area and the most that have attended untill now is about 500 people. We weren't expecting much but thought it would be cool to play outdoors. The sound was being run by another company, so all we had to bring was our instruments. What we saw when we got there was totally off the charts!

Blurry, but it gives you an idea of the siz\e of the stage.
The company that did the sound was a professional production agency that is accuctomed to much larger venues. They were paid $5000 to do this, and I'm sure that was at a loss since it was for charity. The equipment was top notch!

The only bummer was, we didn't go on 'til after 11pm. As it was a 24 hr event, they booked us to keep people around longer. It did work, but the place did clear out a lot before we got on - could have been due to the lame-o country kareoke joke the was on before us! He Suuu...uuuuked! Asked us to cal him if we wanted a warm up act. Yeah dude! Wait by the phone!
Still, far and away the biggest crowd we've ever played in front of and the sound was awesome! A friend of mine recorded it all on his state-of-the-art digital mini-disc recorder. Hopefully I'll have some samples to post soon.
On another note, we've started recording our demo cCD this week! I laid down the drum tracks on Sunday. That was a new and exciting experience for me as I have never had any recording experience. That digital multi-track recorder that Robert (bass) has is amazing! Doesn't even sound like me playing - except for the mistakes
I'll post the entire thing up here when it's done, but only if everyone promises to share it freely on the web! Even YOU, Doc!

I got the CD from the guy who recorded our last show on the 13th. To my surprise, it came out amazingly well! This little devise will store over a Gig of music on a tiny little disk. The recorder itself is no bigger than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. And all he had were two condenser mics clipped to the visor of his ball cap aimed in the direction of the stage from about 30 feet into the audience. He had his levels (gain) set a little high initially which caused a little clipping. The bass is a little overbearing at times, too. But all-in-all a very impressive recording.
Here's the highlights:
1. Hello Mama / Straight Jacket - both Originals (http://208.186.113.177/duncan/web/WCB/13May2005/HelloMamaSJ.wma)

4. Brawl - Original (http://208.186.113.177/duncan/web/WCB/13May2005/Brawl.wma)
5. Can't You See - cover (The Allman Brothers Band) (http://208.186.113.177/duncan/web/WCB/13May2005/CantYouSee.wma)

Ok, here's the first four tracks of our demo CD that I'm SURE you've all been waiting for with baited breath! I would have to say it's by FAR the best recording we've made do date. This is certainly because it was created in a much more controlled environment. I laid down the drum tracks about a month ago (which was an interesting experience I can tell you). Since then, Robert (our bassist) has been feverishly mixing down the guitar tracks on his digi-multitrack recorder - in between work and closing and moving into his new home. And we punched in the vocals and harmonies yesterday. I was a very pleasant way to spend my Father's Day, though my wife would differ - I'm not sure why...
This is near CD quality, but still will most likely be remastered yetr again to work the kinks out. Enjoy! Share! And, as always, your feedback is welcomed and appreciated!

Sounds pretty good :) It may just be my perception ;but to me it seems as if the vocals are a bit too "in your face" and the Guitar seems "too distant".This is the third song only though. I have some limited mixing experience but taht was long ago, so I may be full of it?
Musically sounds influenced by Alman Bros/Lynyrd Skynyrd/Outlaws/Molly Hatchet.

**** UPDATE ****
It's been a long slow summer for us. Not a whole lot going on, unfortunately. we'd hoped to be playing out regularly by June or July, but it simply wasn't in the cards. This is mainly due to the fact that our vocalist has been working and going to school full time (and then some!). He is an EMT and is studying to become a full-blown paramedic. He had some 500 hours of clinicals to pull before December 5th. His solution was to pull as many 24 hour shifts as possible - split between work and class - so that he could get it out of the way. The man has been a walking zombie for months now.
We've managed to keep practicing pretty regularly. Added a few new tunes to the set list - a couple originals and some new covers, too. We also finally found a good fit in a second guitarist. God Bless Craigslist! Brian is a 36 year old single dude that works at UNC Chapel Hill as a computer analyst - or something. Real laid back, quiet and unassuming, but a hell of an ax-slinger! Really rounds out our sound nicely. Breathes new life into most of our songs and allows us to go into areas musically that we could not have before. We're all pumped to get out there again.
So here we are, back at the beginning. We're doing another open mic tomorrow night at the Upper Deck Sports Pub (http://www.theupperdecksportspub.com/). If you're in the area, you can get directions here (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=329+N.+Harrison+Avenue+Cary,+NC&iwloc=A&hl=en). We'll be the feature band there again in 2 weeks - means a longer set than the rest. That will hopefully lead to an actual booking.
Then on Oct. 29th we'll be playing the Pittsboro Street Fair. This one actually PAYS! $300 for a one hour set! SCHWING! Gas money! And we've got a private party we're doing on Nov. 5th. So the year's winding up on a positive note. I'll keep posting updates if anyone's interested.

Ah a fellow musician ... awesome. I'll give the tracks you have linked a listen in a moment. I'm actually listening to some tracks from my band's show last Friday. It was our 30th (and final) show of the year.
Sounds like you've got some good gigs man ... fairs and stuff are great, you're practically guaranteed a big audience. Not to mention that playing live in general is the absolute most fun thing ever. EVER. Such a rush. Good luck!!

We went on directly after the 'feature band'. The club was a nice place. Large space with high ceilings. Nice dispersion of sound.
Although I felt that we were of our game a bit, we got pretty good response. Not bad considering we haven't played out since May. We'll be doing the 'feature band spot in 2 weeks - OUR equipment (which is a BIG plus - I HATE playing someone else's drums and this one had absolutely NO ASS AT ALL), and 2 30-45 minute sets.
The lead vocalist from the 'feature band' runs a club in town and asked us to play there soon. It's a small club but has deep roots in southern/country genres. So all in all a successful venture tonight.

I am so excited, I think a little pee just came out! Last night was easily our best show to date! We were the Feature Band at the Upper Deck's Open Mic Night. Same place as two weeks ago. We got 2 thirty minute sets with some blues, funk and accoustic acts in between and after.
Both sets went off flawlessly! The crowd (which was impressive for a Tuesday night) was into it and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and us. I allowed other acts to play on my kit. There was only one other who had a drummer. They were called Allied Threat and they were absolutely wretched! Fortunately, they played last, unfortunately my drums will most likely need all new heads now.
I was asked to sit in on just about every other act that played, Robert our bassist played for one set too. So basically, I played for about 4 hours straight. My arms feel like lead today!
We've been asked to submit calander openings for January, February and March for the Upper Deck ASAP. There was also another local promoter there who is very interested! This thing is looking like it might actually be going somewhere.
Saturday the 29th is our first actual PAYING gig. Pittsboro Street Fair at 4pm. Can't frickin' wait!

Grats DVP you guys are climbing up the ladder very nicely. I'm starting to fiddle with my keyboard and viola again (although EXTREMELY rusty).
No one is worse on drum heads and drum sticks than my friend. To date, he's annihilated about 120 pairs of drumsticks (4 pairs were metal) and has destroyed about 4 sets of heads (this is over about 2 and a half years).

Well, we've crossed a landmark. WCB actually turned a dollar or two! We played the Pittsboro Street Fair on 10/29 for $300 and then a private party on 11/5 for another $300 (supposed to be $250, but I guess they liked us 8)). Nice to have $120 in my pocket for doing something I love!
The Street Fair went amazingly well. The crowd was a little subdued, as can happen in these types of venues, but we were approached by several appreciative standers-by. One in particular is apparantly a local big-shot who won some sort of Poker Championship to the tune of about $8 million. Word is he is interested in sponsoring us. Some new equipment and free studio time. Meh, I'll believe it when I see it...
Anyway, the show was recorded again this time. The quality is far and away better than anything we've gotten to date. Notice the difference a second guitarist makes!

We're pretty much done for the rest of the year. That is unless one of the dozen or so business cards I handed out produces a gig request. Now it's on to new material. John has three more originals for us to learn. And there's about 20-some-odd covers we need to dust off.
On another note, I recently registered WCBLive.com. Ferret is developing our web page and WangChung is cleaning up our logo (seen below). I'm hoping for a 'go-live' date of Jan. 1st. I know both of these guys are busy as hell, so I'll take what I can get.

2005 is behind us. It wasn't all that we hoped it might be, but I really have no regrets. It was a year of formation. We grew a lot last year: lost a bass player and guitarist, but found a better bass player in Robert. Even though he's a guitarist by trade, he took on the challenge and has been doing a spectacular job. Then we found Brian throught the miracle that is Craigslist (http://raleigh.craigslist.org/). This addition was truly a turning point for the band. We have been able to expand in ways that none of us could have forseen in the past. He added new life to our existing material and has opened the door to new areas musically - not only in the type of covers we can do but in the quality of originals we are capable of producing.
There have been 3 new songs written and arranged since our last performance in Nov. And there's a fourth in the works right now. On the first 3, John has provided the lyrics and basic chord progression for the band then the rest of us completed the package collectively. The fourth - currently in the 'roughing out' phases - began with a tricky yet catchy little riff that Brian started tooling around with at a practice a few weeks ago. It's looking to be one of the best we've put out to date!
So next on the agenda for WCB is an entry into a 'Battle of the Bands' competition being held next Saturday night (Jan. 28th) in Cary, NC. A club called The Hibernian Pub (http://www.hibernianpub.com/index.php) is hosting the event that will be going on well past spring and into the summer. As I understand it, there are entries from all up and down the coast and as far west as Nashville. The winner gets a 10 song professional recording session... or so I'm told. My thoughts are, screw it! I'm just out to have fun and play a little music. See if we can get a rise out of a few new fans.
As always, the more support we get the better. If anyone in this communitty is in the vacinity and can make it out we'd love to see you! And your friends... and their friends... etc.

Finally getting a chance to report on last Saturday's performance. It went as good as we could have expected. There were a few hitches as there usually are in a multi-band event.
First, the club wasn't ready for the first act - which turned out to be us - when we got there. They were still cleaning up from the dinner crowd. Then when they did get the stage cleared they rushed us on. I was sweating before I even sat down to play. We had hoped to get another recording of this event, but due to the chaos I did not have the time to set up the equipment. Bummer.
Then it apparantly was our fault that we got a late start so we had to cut one of the new originals from the lineup. May have been a good thing though as David wasn't entirely comfortable with all the lyrics yet.
The performance itself went over amazinly well. We played to a slam packed house and the crowd was very responsive. Every song was followed by thunderous cheers and applause. Many people were asking whether we were a local act or from out of town and how often we played that club. We all handed out all of our business cards that night.
On the way out I ran into the club owner who stated that he could safely welcome us into the next round of competition. We were up against a quasi-metal band out of Wilmington, NC named 'Wide Open' who didn't have a very good showing. They drove straight to the event after a night of partying. They were all pretty strung out and pretty sloppy. Bad for them, good for us.
Next stop is a possible revisit of the Open Mic Night at the Upper Deck Sports Pub on Feb. 23rd if everyone's schedule lines up. This would be a good thing as we are actually booked for a full night at that same club the following weekend on March 3rd. Theat's followed by another full night's booking at a small club in Pittsboro, NC called the Pit Stop on March 25th. These two gigs will pull in nearly $1000 for us.
It's gonna be a good year!

WCB Headlines at The Upper Deck Sports Bar & Pub March 3rd, 2006!
The Upper Deck Sports Bar & Pub (http://www.upperdeckcary.com/index.php)
That's right! It's finally arrived. This will be our first paying full night's event! We've gotten a little something here and there for a few outdoor venues and a couple of private parties, but this is the moment we've been working so hard for!
This booking stemmed from an appearance at an Open Mic Night at the same club last fall. we first did a 20 minute set and then were asked back to be the 'Feature Band' at a second one. Only a few short weeks later, we received a call to play a Friday night gig. God damn! That seemed like ages ago!
We go on at 10pm and will continue to rock the house until 1:30am - or until the place runs out of beer, which ever comes first. I had hoped to get a good recording of the show like the one we did at the Pittsboro Street Fair, but at the moment I am scrambling to get a replacement as Plan A fell through just today. We will be getting a video recording either way, but the hope was to get a good digital audio track to sync it up with and (with a little luck) produce a decent DVD. That would be a classy way to promote ourselves rather than a biz card and a CD or tape (Heaven forbid!). No worries though! The real reason for the night is to have a good time and earn some new fans.
Those of you within reasonable range had better find a way to show your faces or we will be forced to hunt you down like the dogs you are!!
Send me a bus ticket from Indy :P

The "Anywhere With Electricity Tour 2006" is in full swing!
Our last show at The Upper Deck was a complete blow out! The house was totally packed. At least 120, maybe 150 people there. A lot of familiar faces to be sure, but we also made a lot of new friends as well. This club has a pretty regular clientele, so there were a lot of skeptical looks as we set up our equipment. But as the crowd kept rolling in and the drinks started flowing the skepticism turned to anticipation.
Before we even played a note, the owner of the club approached us and informed us that he had already planned on rebooking us for late spring. Apparently he had never seen a band draw such a large crowd on a Friday night. The really cool thing was that we kept the place packed until well into our third set. By then there were plenty of drunks hollerin' and some of the lower-keyed patrons began to filter out, but not before coming up to the stage and offering thanks, congratulations, high-fives and hugs to each of us. Great show... one for the books!

Additions to the show included an instrument switch where John picked up the bass and Robert wields the guitar while singing lead to Tom Petty's "Last Dance for Mary Jane". Also, yours truly wears his new headset mic (used primarily for backup vocals and harmonies) and sings lead to George Thorogood's "You Talk Too Much". Both proved to be huge crowd pleasers!
Next show is this Saturday night at The Pitt Stop Cafe' and Race Shop (http://www.wcblive.com/dates.php) in Pittsboro, NC. we go on at 8:00pm and play until 12:00am. There is a $10.00 cover charge at the Pitt Stop, but that 10 bucks covers food AND the entertainment! You can't beat a deal like that!
There's already a lot of buzz in the area about WCB and we've built quite a loyal following that can be counted on to bolster enthusiasm and attendance everywhere we go.
Stay tuned!

HUGE thanks goes out to the Pitt Stop Cafe' for hosting this event! This just keeps getting easier and easier all the time.... and it doesn't even feel like WORK!
There was a really good turnout for a somewhat out-of-the-way local hot spot. For those who don't know Central North Carolina, Pittsboro is about 30 minutes west of Raleigh and South of Chapel Hill. It's juuuuust to the east of BFE. So when somewhere to the tune of 100 people show up, pay a COVER CHARGE, and stay until past midnight, you know they gotta be there to see something.
A little more subdued than our last show, at least to start. But when the we wrapped up our first set with Carolina Fine, the walls were rockin' to stompin' feet and clappin' hands! After that it was all we could do to get a few minutes break before being nearly shoved back on stage to pump up the volume again!
We were booked for an 8pm to 12 midnight timeslot, so when the bewitching hour rolled around we were ready to pack it in. The last set was closed outt with a personal favorite: "Old Entertainers" - kind of a WCB way of doing Stairway to Heaven, Free Bird and Highway Song al;l wrapped up into one. But no sooner did we get off stage when the club owner started waving greenbacks to get another 30 minutes out of us. Who are we to argue with THAT?!
We'll be back at the Pitt Stop on May the 13th to help put Pittsboro on the map yet again. Hope to see y'all then!

Here's what's happening with WCB so far this spring/summer:
We were invited back to perform for the Relay for Life charity drive for cancer research. It was an honor for us to lend support to such a good cause. Too bad the weather didn't hold up as was hoped - especially for the poor folks walking in the rain. We at least were under a canapy on stage. But the turnout was vary good, the crowd seemed to appreciate the distraction and we of course had a really good time!
We'll be back at the Pitt Stop Cafe' tomorrow night, May 13th. This was and unexpected yet pleasant surprise. After playing there on March 25th we were rebooked immediately. I guess the owner liked what he saw!
WCB made it to the next round of the Battle of the Bands competition we performed in January! This really wasn't too much of a surprise, but it was really nice to get that call! The next night of competition will be on June 3rd. There will be 3 other bands performing and crowd participation will be key in deciding who moves on. We'll be counting on all the local support we can get, so if your phone rings just go ahead and answer. Don't make us come to your house!
After that is another appearance att the Upper Deck in Cary, NC and then we take the show on the road to play a private party on a house boat in Tennessee! That one we're all really looking forward to as a bunch of us will be making the trip on bikes! It's going to be a relly good summer. Thanks to all who helped make it possible!
Rock on!
