Alright, pretty much 'sight unseen' I picked Fable II up last night, and so far I have been pretty impressed. Here are a few highlights from the manual (with some of my reactions) that have made me quite interested in how this game will progress:

Good and Evil - Making good/evil choices effects your physical appearance. Good deeds makes you a dashing hero, and being evil leads to being a scary looking SOB. So far it seems like these choices are pretty cut and dry. Either do something ridiculously evil (give a guy to a slave trader) or good (let the guy go).

Purity and Corruption - Purity makes your hero more attractive, corruption makes you more ugly. This is a little bit more subtle and is determined by factors such as greed, gluttony and laziness. I haven't personally seen any major indicators of this yet, but i'm not too far in.

Physical Appearance - Other factors affect your physical appearance: "Eatt oo many pies and you'll become fat. Develop your strength and you'll bristle with muscles. Focus on Skill and you'll grow taller. If you use magic spells, glowing Will lines will crisscross your skin." There are also a bunch of clothing choices that have different properties. I found an assassins coat that gave me +5.0% to evilness already!

Abilities - There are 3 basic abilities areas: Strength, Skill and Will. Strength governs melee weapons, Skill gives you proficiency with ranges, and Will with magic. You can choose to go down all one path, or do a hybrid. When you kill enemies, you get XP based on how you killed the mobs. So if you beat them with a mace, you get strength, if you shot them with an inferno you get will. You also get 'general' XP which can be added to either of the XP amounts and go towards anything.

Dog - You have a canine companion that travels with you. If you knock enemies down he will attack them for you. He also growls to warn you of enemies, and will bark and run to point out treasure/dig spots. He also becomes good/evil looking with you.

Death - When you die, you fall to the ground and all of your XP dissapears. You pop up and knock all enemies back and keep fighting. However dying gives your physical appearance scars etc.

Renown - A measure of reputation in the kingdom. Doing quests, and how you are viewed by villagers etc. "You can also earn renown by posing for statues and showing off trophies gained in the course of your quests."

Combat - The combat system can be simple, or elegant. If you just want to spam the attack button you can generally do ok (good for newbies), but if you want, there are some more advanced maneuvers that require some finesse. For example, with melee weapons after you get the 2nd level flourish ability, you hold down 'X' and push the left stick towards an enemy. When the controller starts shaking, you let go of X and you do a bigger attack etc. It's actually quite fun to beat enemies down in this game, so the combat on ALL fronts (melee, magic, and range) is enjoyable.

Crime and Punishment - When you are talking to friendly people, you have 'safety mode' on by default. However, you can turn that off at anytime and slaughter anyone you want. If you are caught committing a crime, you will be arrested and have to pay a fine or do community service etc. Here is a list of the crimes you can commit: Assault, Attempted Murder, Murder, Drunk and Disorderly Conduct, Trespassing, Dereliction of Payment, Gross Dereliction of Payment, Public Indecency, Extortion, Harassment, Vandalism, resisting Arrest, Violating Parole, Stealing. There are a LOT of things you can do while interacting with villagers, and you can pretty much doa nything you want.

Expressions - One of the larger components in the game is the 'expression wheel'. Basically, on top of all of the standard RPG elements included in the game, they have added an entire 'The Sims' style sub system. You have a huge selection of various expressions you can do to people, which raises or lowers their opinion of you in different categories. Once they love you enough, they'll give you gifts or follow you if you ask them to etc.

Having Wild Sex - Is certainly part of this game. Directly from the manual: "Whether you're married or not, it is possible to have sex with many of the people you meet on your travels, for love or money. Prostitutes are relatively common ni the seedier parts of Albion and it is they who are most vocally discussing a fascinating new invention: the condom. Using this device is the only reliable way to avoid contracting the nasty sexually transmitted diseases that many people carry and, or course, to prevent pregnancy. Condoms are available for sale from certain merchants. To have sex with a villager, use the follow expression to lead them to a bed, then ress A to put the bed to good use."

Marriage - You can get married, have a family, move them into a house, buy them furniture, give them a monthly stipend etc. You can also have more than ONE wife. But the manual warns: "maintaining seperate lives is tricky, and should the families become aware of each other, there will almost certainly be trouble." If you aren't at home enough, or don't see your family enough your wife can divorce you etc.

Jobs - It looks like these are generally 'mini-games' that allow you to earn money. Right now I am a level 3 blacksmith. Blacksmithing basically had a bar with a section of it colored green. A white circle traversed the bar at varying speeds, and I had to hit 'A' when it entered the colored area that kept getting smaller. Making certain amounts of gold raise your blacksmithing level etc. I imagine it works similarly for many jobs. Here is the job list from the manual: Bartenders, Woodcutter, Blacksmiths, Bounty Hunters, Civilian Displacement Agent (Slaver), Assassins.

Pub Games You can gamble in pubs. You can also borrow money to gamble, giving you a debt! You can also play the pub games online against other people, earning prestige and ranking online, and winning money to bring back to your regular game. You can also enter tournaments to win rare items etc.

Real Estate - You can buy pretty much any house, shop or stall in the game. Owning shops means you can set prices, get a discount on items, pay employees etc. You can also rent out houses to people, and/or move your family into houses and furnish them.

Online/Same Xbox Coop - You can play this game coop over xbox live, or on the same xbox. One person plays a hero, and the other person plays a 'henchmen', which is basically just a dude that runs around and helps ass whoop people. Haven't tried it yet, but it looks fun.

Current Thoughts - This game can seem a little daunting, but it's very well put together so far. There is tons of exploring, lots of different loot, tons of different ways you can take your character beyond the standard choose good/evil. It's definetly a game i'll be exploring for a while.

Yeah... I have been playgint Fable 2 almost non stop. I dislocated my thumb and tore the muscle and tissue in it so I can't move it around as much. I pretty much have spent about 15 or so hours on it.

All I cna so this has been pretty much insane. I bought myself a tavern which has made me a good amount of money for awhile.

My baby boy is now a kid. He rocks.

Sadly. I am pissed off because I ordered the special edition. I never got the special weapon. I need to call gamestop today and figure out how to fix that.

yeah. one of the funny admins edited my post with those in there.

haha. rape is funny...

anyway, played it a bit more last night, and the first thing to notice is that I am having some serious fun in this game. Basically, combine The Sims with KOTOR 2 in a Grand Theft Auto world and you have a fair approximation of what is going on in this game.

however, I would be remiss to state that this game is DEFINETLY not the polished work that I had hoped for. There are glitches galore, and if you read some of the message boards, there are apparently some game ending glitches that can bug your character and prevent you from completing the game. I can't confirm or deny these, but I can confirm on some of the glitchier aspects of the game.

Current Cons
For starters, you spend a SHITLOAD of time in the menu system. All of your quests, items, weapons, clothes etc are contained in the menu and like most RPG style games, you'll be in there frequently. It's poorly designed. Like, it's painful to use. It's slow, vaguely unresponsive (maybe just a 360 version thing), has weird display options (you see a picture and a vague description of an object first, and then you have to push left on the control stick to see more in depth information), there isn't a good distinction between objects that can be USED and objects that are there for informational purposes only (you collect books all over the place, some just let you read stuff in them, and some are actual USE items that give you or your dog different expressions/abilities. There is no distinction besides reading the description). You end up with a long list of books early, and if you go to the bookstore in town and buy a bunch of expression books, you'll be forced to navigate INTO the menu > items > books & documents > scroll down to your item > use it. Then it will take you OUT of the menu, show you the effect, and then force you to start all over again. Annoyingly tedious.

There are a billion things you have to keep track of (food, gifts, books & documents, furniture etc etc) and it's just a pain using their system. My inventory is already unmanageable, and I have a hard time knowing what to throw and what to keep. They also don't have any type of 'bag limit' system, so you can apparently carry as much as you want.

Buying property also has some inherent annoyances as well. I own 3 stalls around Bowerstone, as well as a nice little house across the street from the bookstore. However, I have ABSOLUTELY no way (that I can find) to view a listing of all of my current holdings. I cant' remember where in the **** my first fruit cart is, and I have no way to go change the settings on it. A 'remote' management system would make sense, especially since they intend for you to pretty much buy everything in the town anyway. Anyone found a way to see a listing of all of your real estate?

It's also turning out to be just a tad too easy to woo people. You can literally stand there and dance 4 or 5 times and have someone fall madly in love with you. Hell, you can accidentally cause BYSTANDERS to fall madly in love with you because of residual postive/negative feelings.

When wandering through the market in bowerstone, everywhere I look is some guy or gal who is pestering me to get them a ring. I would kind of hoped that it would have been a little bit more difficult to win the hearts and minds of the citizens. You now, work on the same barmaid for a few days, be forced to mix up your interactions, bring them favorite presents/take them to favorite spots etc. Maybe later on in the game it gets more difficult.

One of the most annoying glitches has to do with the glowy path that leads you around to various quest locations. They really did away with a decent mapping/mini-map system, so you choose a quest as a 'target' and a glowy trail shows you the path. When it's working, it's good, but it can be glitchy as shit. Half the time the trail just won't show up, or you are running too fast and it won't be able to redraw in front of you. Makes questing pretty obnoxious on occasion.

I am also kind of saddened by the current lack of 'side quests'. So far, pretty much everything I have done has been part of the main story chain. I've cleared out a lot of bandits, but it's mostly been at the insistence of people who are in the main story path. I haven't run across the random person in town yet who needs me to go clear out some cave of ghouls etc. This could very easily change as I get further into the game as well.

Current Pros
Once again, the thing to keep in mind, is that even with all of those 'cons', I still am having a BLAST playing this game. There is so much going on, that you can't help but get involved with how you are managing your character. Eat too much chocolate/pie and you'll gain fattness points. Eat celery and carrots, you'll get thin points. Eat meat you get some fat and gain some strength too etc. You can spend hours wandering around bowerstone doing jobs, talking to people, pleasuring your wife (sexually), and basically just exploring in a non-quest specific setting. All the time your character is improving, so it makes you feel involved, not frivolous.

The combat in this game is actually reall quite good. It can be fairly simple if you want (mashing on various buttons will kill creatures), however there is a lot of in depth moves you can use, and some intricate timing patterns. Killing creatures in more advanced ways actually nets XP bonuses, so there are definetly advantages besides killing faster.

The social aspects of the game are certainly entertaining too. I have a wife (with whom I had unprotected sex, creating an offspring), she needed a house and I give her a daily stipend etc. If I don't go back enough, bring her presents, or sex her up frequently enough she gets bitchy and can eventually divorce my delinquent ass. You can pretty much buy any structure in the game. Houses can be moved into or rented out, stores can have the prices set etc. I was a tad dissapointed as to the depth of the 'store management' options. But seeing as how there isn't really a way to set options remotely, it's probably just as well. You collect money periodically (like, every 2 minutes) from your stores. This continues in AND out of game. So hopefully when I get home tonite i'll have a fat stack of the gold.

The clothing system is fun as well. They've done away with complicated 'stats', and have a pretty straightforward stystem. Wearing a bandit's mask might add 5% to aggressiveness, or an assassin's cloak adds 15% to evil. Wearing woman's clothing as a man adds a crossdressing bonus. There isn't really any 'armor' rating etc, so clothing is used mainly to display your wealth etc. I imagine as the game goes on, there might be some clothing that adds to attacks, but I'm pretty much stuck wearing stuff that makes me look like a dandy. But the ladies like it, because the 'poshness' value of my items is through the roof. And yes, the actual value in game is 'poshness'.

Another huge advantage is that travel is instantaneous. It takes 'game time' to travel, but you arrive immedietly. You have to visit a place first, but that isn't particularly annoying or unheard of. Sadly, figuring out where you need to go to without a good map system sucks (see some complaints above) but quests will offer to warp you to the nearest location. Also, it doesn't take too long before you know your way around pretty well.

The pub mini games are fun, but are PURE gambling. I have played 2. Keystone and the box game. keystone is a dice game where you basically place bets as to what numbers are going to come up. the box game is a slot machine with some twists. There is apparently a huge online component around these games, you can go online with your hero or another avatar, play games or tournaments with people, and bring back your earnings to the game. So far, I haven't really seen the draw. The payouts are shitty, and there just doesn't seem to be the ability to make large sums of cash if you are lucky. You would have to get lucky A LOT of times in a row due to low table maximum bets. They also FORCE you to take a loan out before using the table. It's kind of odd.

The jobs still continue to be amusing for some reason. I've done the blacksmithing and the woodcutting, and rage has started doing assassinations (he ****ed up some random housewife the assassin's guild wanted him to kill. he walked into her house, asked her to go upstairs, turned the 'civilizan safety' switch off, and gutted her like a christmas goose. got paid 900g for it too...). Jobs are a lot like merchant sales. They pop up at random times, and you have a time window in which you can take a job before it stops hiring. The professions are basically mini-games, and you can do as many as you want really. I'm waiting for a bartender one to open up so I can check that out too. I have a feeling that having a high skill in certain professions will open up more opportunities down the road. Plus, it's a great quick way to make some cash.

Smokeh,

Luckily I have been able to veg out on the game ever sense the midnight release on Tuesday.

SPOILER---------------------------------------------

Later in the game there are many different side quests. They can be a lot of fun and get extremely crazy. This usually happens after the you go in to the dark spire where the main evil guy (lucious or however it is said or spelt) after you spend 10 years in there. Lots of stuff to do continuously!

End Spoiler------------------------------------------------------------------------

The game is great. I am still pissed off that I didn't recieve my content for getting the special "collectors edition" What a ****en rip off. http://forums.xbox.com/8/23429740/ShowPost.aspx#23429740

I have played probably close to 20 hours. I am believe I am close to the end but I am not so sure yet.

BTW Smokeh... I thought you might want to know I just spent 100,000 gold on a mansion lol.

I own a tavern a blacksmith two houses and 3 stand. Cha ching ;).

BTW at one point I had two wives and two kids... then I decided to see if both of my wives would live under the same house so I could rent out the other one.

Lets just say that ended with me now having 1 kid and 1 wife lol.

My first impressions:
-The overall feel is very immersive, 1080p hotness. Maybe because I'm still new to the 360, but if every game looks this good from now on, I could see myself moving away from the PC again.
-Camera is a bit annoying, but I think I'm getting the hang of it.
-Transition to swimming is suprisingly choppy (water splash animation)... and feels out
of scale.

I've gotta relearn the interface, I like the combat stystem a lot, and the emotes are hillarious just like the first game.

smokeh

most games look BETTER than this game on a nice TV with the 360/PS3. however, you will never move away from the PC because of A. MMORPGs B. Teamspeak/Vent C. First Person Shooters.

You just have to balance both.

So, now I own EVERY house and shop in the market. I'm making ~6k gold every 5 minutes. I went to do the crucible quest, bought 50k worth of new weapons, leaving me with about 20k. When I was done with the crucible, I had well over 100k. It's ****ing ridiculous now.

I pretty much just ignored the storyline for a long ass time, and just built up my massive holdings.

And now that i'm hitting the rest of the game, there is still a SHITLOAD to do.

I did blacksmithing last night to 4 stars (i think, maybe 3), and chopped wood too. I bought 1 kart, it makes mediocre gold. without even trying i have half the chicks in town all over me, they need to make that harder...

I'm suprised at how bad the arc animation thing is for doing a job, its choppy as hell and blacksmithing is a pain in the ass (i rarely make it past a 5 multiplier). smokeh
10-26-2008, 02:42 PM
Yeah, i just finished the story line a couple hours ago. It does NOT dissapoint. The story line is good stuff.

The other awesome part is that when you are done with the story line part of the game... you aren't even close to done yet. A bunch of stuff can't even be done until you defeat the game.

The second I beat the game, a bunch of new quests got unlocked and I was able to buy a certain property for 1 million gold. :) That put my holdings up above 2.5 million and I was crowned king AND mayor!

Fred: I've noticed some glitchiness, but i've never frozen at all. Check your 360, it might be getting too hot or something. I've noticed that menus and other things tend to lag a lot, so i'm not sure if that has something to do with it.

smokeh was crowned king?

Yeah, after you have over 2.5 million in real estate holdings the title of 'king' is unlocked. After you buy aforementioned property (which becomes available upon finishing the story line of the game), you also have access to the title 'Mayor'.

One of the things this game did absolutely amazingly right was have the main story line be only a fractional part of the game. If desired, I could have probably run through the main story in 4 or 5 hours, without doing any side quests etc.

The real fun of this game comes from all of the side quests, adventures, mini games, jobs, alternate character story lines, and free exploration. This is probably the first game i've ever seen where, after beating the game and getting the credits, it dumps you back into the world and says "yeah, good job with all of that, but we're going to unlock a bunch more shit for you to do to enhance and improve your character... so yeah, you really aren't 'done done', you just finished our interesting story arc."

I mean, you can't even collect all 50 gargoyles/silver keys BEFORE the end of the game, because some of them are contained in the castle that you can't buy BEFORE you beat the game. At least one of the demon doors isn't even attainable until after the game, and the archeaologist gives you the final 3 quests only after lucien is dead. Hell, when you buy your castle there are multiple quests that open up INSIDE the damn castle etc.

And don't get me started on the fact that the Brightwood Tower opened up ANOTHER awesome dream quest after the game ended.

Chesty is my favorite character in the game, hands ****ing down.

Chesty for life yo.

Really, I felt like completing the main story line was really nothing more than finishing an extended quest. They really managed to set this game up more like a single player MMO than any other game i've seen.

Things I plan to do now that i'm 'done'.

1. Finish off my last 11 gargoyles. I'll probably search for an hour to an hour and a half myself, but i'm sure i'll end up relying on an online guide to track down a couple of the stubborn bastards.

2. Finish up my last 15ish keys. (same as gargoyles)

3. Get all of the expression statues unlocked, and see what the **** they end up doing.

4. Finish archeaologist quest.

5. Explore the castle i bought.

6. Purchase and explore Reaver's mansion (which is only available after you beat the game).

7. Explore the cellar in Gile's farm (this was available before the game was over, but it looked like it would give me 'evil' points, so I ignored it).

8. Finish maxing out all of my will spells. I've been maxed out on skill and strength for a while now.

9. Finish all of the demon doors.

10. Find the last 2 statue pedestals.

11. More random shit that unlocks as I finish more things.

The other component that makes me very interested in how this game set up, is that I can see DLC being a really integral part to increasing the 'playability' of the game. We saw Bethesda do it with Oblivion, but I think Fable II could really set the bar for possibly 'episodic' gaming, or extending the life of an already released game.

It has already been noted that there is a distinct lack in new clothing/hair styles. Unfortunatley, what I bought in the first part of the game was all that was available throughout the rest. So I anticipate a couple of lame 'clothing' expansions, and probably a 'weapon' expansion etc. But what is really exciting is that they could easily release tons of new quests and adventures, and even add on some storyline content. After you've beaten the game, a new evil has to be faced. Make it an hour or so of new primary content, with 4-5 hours of secondary content and people will gladly spend 10 bucks for that over the Marketplace.

Hell, if i'm willing to play a game with the same character after i've already beaten it, I really think they could make that work.

... thought my character was looking odd... then started farming celery... now he looks right (holy crap was he fat).

Finished the Crucible again, farming quests and bartending for money.

Annoyance: If you move a wife to a different house, you cant rent the old one out.

sure you can. make sure you set the house as your 'marital' house, and then have wifey follow you and interact with the sign to get her to live there. your other house can then be rented out.

your charater, when he is maxed out in Strength, looks porky no matter what. I did get super-fat in the crucible the first time through, because I apparently had nothing but pies and meat all up in my inventory, and I came out 300lbs heavier than I went in.

I too, had to farm the celery.

Luckily I haven't had to bartend or anything for cash in such a long time. 15k+ a tick 4tw!

I had to farm the celery many times!

Also smokeh i am going to tell you something that isn't very obvious.

You know when you go to the brightwood tower where you do the Chesty quest?

When you go up the stairs to the area where the blue portal sits on the ground. Go as far left as you can. You will see a broken part of the wall. Walk up to it and it should make you look down. Hit A and jump. Finish that area up it has a sweet surprise at the end.

I finished the 10 year thing last night, bought a bunch of properties in bowerstone, still cant rent out house #1 (wife is in House #2), the furniture store doesnt have squat for me to buy to make her happy, she wont hold up her end of marital duties even though she's full on the love bar and my family quest menu says she wants it...

I'm way skinnier, way more pure and stuff, my dog is gold now, before he was rather brown...

Yeah I am pretty pissed off about the collectors edition. Now everyone can get the DLC for free so I would check that out if I were you guys.

I am gonna see about returning the game today and just getting the regular version.

looks like I can't return it but I can replace it.. probably with another one that doesn't have the codes.

My 360 is brand new, like less than a month... I have it on its side, with nothing obstructing the bottom or backside... and I couldnt even reboot/shutdown with the controller when it froze. Hasnt happened since Saturday though... and I'm saving a LOT more often.

Have you guys tried co-op yet? My gamertag is Guysmileypkt, we should give it a shot.

my understanding of the co-op is that the main player (hero) controls the camera for the 2nd player (henchman)

Am I the only one with a targeting problem? I targeted a traveling merchant to lower costs and a bit later had to fight bandits on like the other side of Bowerstone Lake yet I was STILL targeting the merchant so when I went to shoot with my clockwork rifle, half the time I brought up the character info for the merchants likes/dislikes. It totally SUCKED. and if I target anyone else the target is maintained on THAT person until I leave the area or something

BTW time control is the best/most busted spell ever

everytime you warp behind an enemy (guard/bandit) they redraw their weapons and have to re-target you.

Warp, do a few hits, warp again, do a few hits, slow time, collect orbs, warp...

Fred

i only use the target (L button) when I need to plink off troll nodes... the rest of the time the combat system is fast enough not to need to focus target.

I really like Raise Dead right now... combine Rank 3 with Rank 4 Force Push and you can pile on massive damage while the baddies are trying to kill your zombie/ghost things.

I have bought pretty much everything in the pirate town I can... pulling in about 2500 per tick now, quite nice. About to start the quests for the 3rd hero... already did the pirate treasure island (weak).

got my first gargoyle there though.

Dark Knight Zer0
10-29-2008, 11:39 PM
bought all of the gypsy town and almost half of bowerstone square

Getting almost 4k a tick, not to mention major money from buying and selling items. Maintaining 3 wives can be a hassle...gonna have to sacrifice 2 if not all 3 to the Temple so I can get my anti-good guy weapon

btw the gypsy town in Bowerstone Lake is a great place to go on a rampage and kill guards very easily

Yea but I dont want to think about how long you stared at that damn Arc tapping A to farm up money bartending... :p

smokeh

You know the funny thing is, it's really a snowball effect. i bartended the money to buy the blacksmith and the inn basically, and then the amount per tick just kept rolling in.

yeah, I did a lot of 'jobs' at the beginning, and probably wasted a couple hours, but at some point you can cross the threshold of never having to to tap 'a' again, and just watch the money go ding every 5 minutes.

Especially since I spent SO much time at the very beginning of the game doing it. I was making 3 or 4k a tick before I had even found the first hero. That starts to add up FAST down the road, it snowballs.

Now, when you beat the game and want to buy the awesome properties, you're going to have to bartend for a long time yourself! much longer than I ever bartended, even at the beginning.

Fred
10-30-2008, 04:50 PM
oh after seeing how much more the bar and blacksmith bring in compared to the fruit stands and houses, they're getting bought up asap... being a residential landlord is crap income.

Funny thing yesterday - I didnt have a halo the day before when i saved and quit, but upon logging in had the shiny ring around my head...

Dark Knight Zer0
10-30-2008, 11:09 PM
jack up the cost of rent on your properties

you will lose that halo really really quick

Fred
10-31-2008, 08:39 AM
Now my eyes glow red... and I still have the halo... even though I've been giving the thumbs up to a lot of ladies in the pirate town...

I pretty much own the pirate town now, bought the whole gypsy camp, and a good chunk of Bowerstone and the farm village area... well over 4.5k per tick now. Bars and Blacksmiths are where its at, dont bother with the fruitstands till after you get the big ones.

Nades-GanjaErk
10-31-2008, 01:35 PM
I bought all of the pirate town... all of bowerstone (besides the castle) and all of the gypsy place... everything down 20-25%. barely making 10k a tic
