View Full Version : Official "Is it Still Good" Thread

We need a stickied thread to discuss something that men every where are always wondering: Is this still good?

Women, being crazy, will always say "When in doubt, throw it out."

Men, however, are more practical. We want to keep it, even if we're nervous about trying it to find out of it's still good.

For today's question:

Will a refrigerated, open jar of dill pickles go bad?

<Lanna> if they are soft though, don't eat them
<Lanna> but they can't rot - not in vinegar

Pickles will prolly take a long time to go bad. Bacteria and vinegar don't get along too well.

I don't think Pickles even come with an expiry date.. I've had a jar of pickles in my fridge for over a year. Opened. Still eat em. (It's a really big jar.)

Sour cream, go by the expiry date for sure.... Anything dairy for that matter. Cheese is the only food that you can slice off the mold and eat what's below though. The entire cheese could be covered in mold and you just need to slice it all off.

if it is past the expiration date, throw it away. if you are in doubt, throw it away. it is far better than getting food poisoning.

shredded cheese i toss via the date usually, whereas a block, yes, you can cut mold off of.

any mold in shredded cheese results in the entire package being tossed regardless of date.

The date on milk is not expiration;it's a sell-by date and continues to say it's good for a week past that if it has been properly refrigerated.

Slurpy
10-04-2008, 04:34 PM
Which it never will be, because it has been shipped to the store, and refrigerated trucks are NEVER refrigerated properly.

Well being a chef.

Test 1 is it moldy? can the mold be cut off? what kind of mold?

test 2: does it smell off? Does it not smell? is it abnormal smell?

test 3: touch does it feel soft, hard, not normal?

test 4: taste it u pussies

And Milk is not a sell before date... Speaking from experience here, regularly the day after the date on the jug is the day that it gets that strange taste in it... Often I'll just pour a glass without looking cause I go thru so much, only to taste it being off... By 1 day.. Just nasty...

So Milk is DEFINITELY NOT a sell before day and if I ever found a restaurant that was using even 2 day old milk, I would not be visiting that place again.

blue
10-05-2008, 09:25 AM
actually it is a sell by date.

Q. Can I drink milk after the printed date on the carton?
A. The shelf life of milk is affected by several factors including how it is handled before and after it is purchased. When stored at 40 degrees Fahrenheit and not left out of the refrigerator for extended time periods, milk should last approximately 5-7 days past the "sell by" date.

ferret

5-7 days... I'd rather just consider the sell by as "expiration". Seems safer. Maybe some idiot truck driver left it cooling on the back loading dock too long.

With milk all you have to do is the sniff and taste. If it smells good give it a little taste, if it taste good then its good.

I wasn't pointing out that beer is better than milk, rather that milk is worse than beer. And you shouldn't be relying on milk for your vitamins, minerals, and protein just as you wouldn't beer.

I agree. It's been working for me for years. After numerous incidents when I lived with my parents years ago where I poured the last of the cereal in a bowl then had the milk plop into the bowl as chunks I've learned to smell and, if warranted, taste the milk first. This isn't milk past its expiration date, either, but probably just left out too long or not refrigerated cool enough.

milk sucks is a PETA site, so I take anything they say with a grain of salt.

I'd like to see a comparison of skim milk vs. beer. It won't stop me from drinking skim milk because I like it and there is still good nutritional value to milk (also considering the whole milk vs. beer thing was another PETA campaing that got pulled because MADD complained).

Pickles do have an expiration date. Actually, even bottled water has an expiration date... not that it actually goes bad, it doesn't as long as it's not opened and the seal is intact. It's actually an FDA requirement that everything expires, even if it isn't something that goes bad.

Honestly, it depends on how long out of expiration date the item is, I generally toss anything dairy on the date. (although, it seldom lasts that long.) If anything gets warm after being cold, it goes no questions asked. If it's a few days... I'll check dairy products, but I don't like to play with it most of the time. If it's months out of date it just goes directly in the trash... regardless of what it is.

Not everything necessarily smells or tastes bad when it's not good anymore.

A lot of restaurants still do. Watch out for specials that are smothered in some kind of sauce or topping. It could be they're trying to cover something!

Knowing a guy who works for a dairy distributor... if a dairy product is 2-3 days before expiration in his house. He tosses it.

He's the kind of guy who thinks hotdog fillers are just par for the course, and knows what actually goes into aging beef. Sicko has even won a few games of 'Eat That Thing' (don't ask), so I know he is not a food wimp.

If this guys will not eat something I tend to take notice.

Funny thing is that people get IBS, have gut or digestion problems, then go 'oh it's just a day after the date.' Nothing like killing off the good bacteria that lives in your gut because you feel a need to be manly. If you're finding yourself getting backed up, odds are it was DIY perhaps even a few weeks back.
