View Full Version : XBOX 360 With Blu-Ray?!

Rumors had gone around early this year about Blu-Ray being internal on the XBOX 360 as newer systems ship during Q3-Q4. The rumors were squashed by Microsoft back in March, claiming there were no talks with Sony Corp. or the Blu-Ray organization about including the HD technology in their systems. Then back in May, a widespread news bit revealed that a company had won the bid to create the Blu-Ray technology into the systems. So although Microsoft is saying the rumors are false, facts are saying different. People expect the new consoles to ship 3rd Quarter 2008. This would mean that the sole reason people buy PS3s (for Blu-Ray capability) will become a thing of the past, allowing people to get the new 360....for games, Blu-Ray, DVD, and everything else that's offered on the Marketplace. If that happens, the PS3 will surely die out. Here are several articles on the latest news...all dated 5/2/2008:

Fanboy strikes again!

That is not the only reason to get a PS3 and not why everyone is getting one. I know people who have bought PS3 who don't even have HDTVs, and I might do the same. I want a PS3 because it has better exclusive games since almost all the ones I'd want for the 360 come out for the computer too.

I had heard the microsoft will not have blu-ray until the next xbox. Honestly I don't see what the appeal is, dvd's on an HDTV look good. Of course I haven't actually seen a blu-ray movie...

been thought if i should do ps3 or xbox360.

ps3, by far has the absolute top picture quality. 2 games that are out that i care for now. metal gear and gta.

xbox360 has that update feature which gives new missions and supposedly fixes bugs/errors with gta. Also metal gear might port to xbox.

I doubt MGS will go to teh 360. You never know but history has shown they keep their word with Sony only.... and are paid a lot to do so.

The PS3 updates GTA errors and bugs. You don't need XBox live to have patches. The 360 does get the exclusive extra content though.

Not trying to make it a 360 vs PS3 thread. Just EE is the biggest 360 fanboy we have in GH and that first post was rediculus.

A. Blu-Ray is ONLY useful if you have a 1080p TV. 1080i/720p are meaningless to your pathetic blu-ray existence.

B. EE, you're about six months behind the curve. Bashing the PS3 was coolsausage for the first year of it's existence, but as everyone predicted, games are starting to hit the market, and the PS3 isn't going to be the laughing stock of the community much longer. There is some partial truth to the fact that Blu-Ray 'winning' has helped the PS3 along considerably, but so has drops in prices, increased storage, and more that 1 decent game.

C. The 360 & Wii are still on top, but as soon as the next Final Fantasy, and god help us all, God of War get released for the PS3, all bets are off. Sony can sell consoles on titles alone, and they've done it in the past. I bought my first PSX solely because of FFVII =/

D. The current hierarchy is PC > 360 > Wii > PS3 > Tic-Tac-Toe with Doc

Wow, so because my statement matches with that of pretty much every online gaming magazine in the western hemisphere, I'm automatically a fanboy? Your logic is amusing, Doc, seriously. Go read what Gamespot, IGN, and Wired have all said about their thoughts on the PS3 by Q1 2009, especially if the Blu-Ray systems launch this year. And if I were a 360 fanboy, I wouldn't bitch about XBOX Live! and their lack of system updates all the time.

A. 1080p is the highest resolution, so your statement didn't really make much sense. If you have a 1080p unit, it'll backwards support the other resolutions on most TVs.

B. PS3 has no "Big Hit" titles, minus MGS4 and maybe 2 other games. The perfect example is to go to a GameStop and look at the XBOX 360 racks and look at the PS3 racks, then eliminate all of the PS3 titles that are already on XBOX 360...how many do you have left? And how many are big hit titles? Sony needs to release the floodgates on big hits and worry less on hardware atm if they want to even get upto par with the 360. Honestly, I like the PS3, but I'd love it more if it had some great exclusives no one else would ever get. I just feel Sony is making SEGA's mistake that they made with the SEGA Saturn; release an awesome piece of hardware and super powerful, but the games are so hard to make for the system and you get no huge benefit making exclusives. And you have to admit, the SEGA Saturn and Burning Rangers were ****ing awesome!

C. Then the same can be said for Elder Scrolls 5 on XBOX 360 and "God help us all", Gears of War 2. Say hello to "resell value when PS3 prices go down".

D. I have to agree with you there, except I really, really hope PC gaming doesn't go through a "dead period" like it did in the early to mid-90's, where title releases were few and far between.

sony's going to fight tooth and nail to keep any form of blu-ray out of microsoft's reach until probably the next set of consoles...assuming some other form of media isnt used (direct downloads anyone?)

i doubt the rumors are true and I really dont see microsoft putting it INTO the system, rather, making it and ADDON like thier HDDVD drives

The point on 'A' is that unless you HAVE the highest resolution TV, you aren't really getting any benefit from a blu-ray player, you might as well just have a standard upscaling DVD player, it doesn't take advantage of the 1080 progressive scan stuff. therefore if you don't own a 1080p, you shouldn't really worry too much about getting a blu-ray player.

As for your other points,

Who knows about a lot of those games, probably shitty, but it's still a long list.

From digging around on the intertr0ns, the only thing people are saying about the 360 is Gears of War 2, Fable 2, and Too Human.

I am not, by any means a ps3 fanboy, considering I own a 360 and am looking forward to Too Human a ****TON.

But continuing with the tired old story that the PS3 is dead is just ignorant. Believe me, the people that make some of the better games (japanese) love their Sony consoles, and the games ported from there will make the console great again.

The 360 can stick with their frat boy shooters.

And they BETTER have another Dead Rising game, dammit.

Thri, actually, I narrowed it down to:

God of War 3
Heavenly Sword
Killzone 3
MGS4
Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom
FFXIII (and Versus)

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
Guitar Hero 4 w/ drumkit, guitar, and microphone
Gears of War 2
Unreal Tournament 3
Too Human
Midnight Club: Los Angeles
Saint's Row 2
Halo Wars
Splinter Cell: Conviction
Grand Theft Auto 4 - Episode 1 & Episode 2
Doom: Arcade (With 4 player co-op)

That's just big-hits for this year and I didn't get all of them. The only games I find interesting on the PS3 titles list are Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom and WipeOut. Nothing much to jump for.

Also, Smokeh, I understand you now about point 'A', but technically, doesn't Blu-Ray also have capability to read more data? So technically, if a BEST OF collection of games were released on the 360 onto a Blu-Ray disc, it might be able to read it, hmm? All the system would need is Blu-Ray data decoder software via an update, no?

Well, right now I don't own a single current generation console, but if I were to buy one, it would be in this order:

Wii, PS3, 360 (LAST)... Most of the games on the 360 that are most appealing to me also get released on PC. If games like AC and Mass Effect were exclusive, it would probably put it in front of the PS3, but that is not the case. PS3 simply has better exclusive games coming imo.

(http://www.gamespot.com/news/rumorcontrol.html) (http://www.gamespot.com/news/rumorcontrol.html) (http://www.gamespot.com/news/rumorcontrol.html)Xbox 360 getting another price cut? (http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=26455889) Source: Pictures purportedly from an upcoming K-Mart newspaper flyer originally posted on the High-Def Digest forums (http://forums.highdefdigest.com/showthread.php?t=59222).
http://img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/2008/177/xbox360drop963_embed.jpg (javascript:open_blog_image_viewer('2008/177/xbox360drop963_screen.jpg');) What we heard: Last August, Microsoft's plans to drop the price of the Xbox 360 in all of its configurations were leaked four separate times. The Hollywood Reporter ran the news first citing retail sources, then Toys "R" Us, Wal-Mart, and Circuit City all had weekly newspaper ads that prematurely found their way into the public domain. Needless to say, by the time Microsoft finally confirmed the cuts (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6176300.html), few considered the news to be especially shocking.
History may be repeating itself, given that the supposed K-Mart flyer clearly shows a 20GB Xbox 360 system with a "new low price" of $299.99. Currently the 20GB model sells for a suggested retail price of $349.99. The scanned image shows only part of the Xbox 360 listing, and nothing from the rest of the ad save for box art of Civilization Revolution and 2K Sports' Prizefighter. Such pictures can be faked, but if this one was, the creator at least paid enough attention to duplicate the K-Mart circular's font as well as details like the twin-color blowout box announcing the price drop.
The person who posted the images says that the price cut should go into effect around July 6, a Sunday, likely meaning that the ad is intended to run in that edition of the newspaper. It's fairly common for newspaper ads such as this to be printed a week or more in advance of the publication date, and with Civilization Revolution set for release on July 8, the timing of this leak fits well. That's also the week before the big E3 Media and Business Summit (http://e3.gamespot.com/) in Los Angeles, a time when console makers traditionally try to generate momentum for their systems with big announcements.
Although it hasn't quite been a year since the last round of Xbox 360 price cuts, those were a bit mild ($20 on the Core and $30 on the Elite), and the intervening time frame has seen the Xbox 360 hardware lose considerable momentum to the PlayStation 3. According to figures from the industry-tracking NPD Group, the Xbox 360 beat the PS3 in US hardware sales every single month through the end of 2007. However, for the first five months of 2008, the PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 three times, and was only a thin margin behind the Microsoft console for the other two.
Microsoft needs to spark system sales to fend off Sony's advancing PS3. A price cut is one of the simplest, most direct ways to encourage gamers on the fence to take the plunge. Right now customers are likely looking at a Blu-ray drive and built-in wireless support as features well worth the $50 difference between a 20GB Xbox 360 and a 40GB PS3. Widening that gap to a nice round $100 would no doubt make Microsoft's system a much more enticing value proposition for many gamers.
The official story: Microsoft hadn't returned requests for comment as of press time.
Bogus or not bogus?: Probably not bogus.
