Good Evening Everyone,

Well, I need to get a Blue-ray player and was looking at the Sony PlayStation 3. My question is, do I get the 40 GB or the 80 GB one?

The 80 GB Sony PlayStation 3 has:
1.) double the size hard drive
2.) 4 USB ports (as opposed to the 2 on the 40 GB)
3.) Is Flash Memory compatible (you have to get a USB Flash Memory reader on the 40 GB)
4.) Can emulate PS2 games (I believe you currently can't on the 40 GB)

In your opinion, is it really worth it to spend the extra $100 on the 80 GB Sony PlayStation 3?

I'm leaning towards "no" right now.

All PS3's emulate PS2 games, the only difference is Hardware and Software emulation. Wait a little while because Sony will release a 80GB pack with MGS4 and a Dualshock 3 controller (the version with vibration) with the possibility of the upgraded CPU. The current 80GB that they are selling has the first CPU version of the PS3 while the current 40GB has the first upgraded version (Sony is planning another upgrade on the CPU which is not completely comfirmed yet). The upgraded CPU version allows it to run cooler and require less power.

I guess they don't. Doesn't matter to me because I have a PS2. You shouldn't have to base your decision for a next gen based on backwards compatability if you have a PS2 :D.

Well it would be nice to stow the old one in the closet and have less clutter.

Get a slim if you are worried about the space it takes up. Personally my PS2 is the fat one just because of the wonderful things I can put on the 180GB Hard Drive :P.

Possible, but it does more than that.

The article makes it confusing, but I think this could be a 80gb with the upgraded CPU. It is not made clear because they say passively it is an upgrade from the 40gb which currently offers the new CPU. I will have to do some digging around.

Didnt the 80gb always come with the controller with vibration? Ive had a 60gb since last november and my controller vibrates.

Boaisy

They had to take the vibration out due to a patent lawsuit, so most controllers don't have it. When the lawsuit was over, they were allowed to make the Dualshock 3 with the vibration which will now ship with the current and upcomming PS3 models on sale. The controllers themselves are about $45-$50 I think.

As Metal Gear Solid 4 approaches release, Sony and Konami have released definitive details about two previously mentioned console bundles, with some apparent tradeoffs between them. Crave reports (http://macnn.com/rd/101505==http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9946029-1.html?part=rss&tag=feed&subj=Crave) that the limited edition gunmetal grey 40GB model features the same downside as the standard version, in that it can not play Playstation 2 game titles. The special edition will, however, come with a soundtrack and a Blu-ray disc with a behind-the-scenes documentary. The standard black-finish model features an 80GB hard drive, but is also able to boot older game titles, and comes with a flash card reader. While both models feature Metal Gear Solid 4, the latter version also features a free download of the Pain minigame from the online store.

The limited edition gunmetal grey PS3 will sell for $600, while the standard edition bundle will be available for $500 by the end of June.
