I wonder what were some of the rejected show ideas?
"Guess your rapist?"
"Which boyfriend/girlfriend gave you aids?"
"Which boyfriend is the daddy of your child?"

Should this be in the Debate & Serious Discussion forum? Probably not.
That said, the moral depravity showcased in the ever downward spiraling primeres of reality shows is getting quite humorous. I don't know anybody who saw Swan, and didn't get some sick perverted joy out of it. Everybody always wonders what the ugliest girl in the room would look like hot, and as bad as it sounds, it's entertainment.

lol @ fox executive saying not to judge until you watch....
That's like airing a tv show called "Stoning an arabic mother of 4 for allowing herself to be raped" and expexting people to not immediately make forecasted judgements on the moral calibre of the show.

Reality TV means you don't have to pay a team of 12 writers to think up witty comedy for entire seasons. Reality TV means you can't be held hostage for more money per episode by the main characters. People watch this shit. I can't understand why, but they do... and as long as people keep watching this shit, and the networks don't have to invest much money to produce such programs, they are going to continue down the path of turning out shit just like it.

The question/debate...
How stupid are these shows going to get? I mean, seriously. And how stupid is society for watching them?
These days... I only watch a few crime dramas, sci-fi shows, Daily Show, Adult Swim, and American Chopper with regularity. And I could live without tv, if I had to.
Who needs the tv when I got T. Rex?

Honestly, i think that Reality TV is kind of a fad... sooner or later, people are going to just get bored with it... yes, there will be the "hits" of Reality TV... Survivor and The Apprentice... and The simple life... that may go on year after year... but the rest of them are probably going to end up flopping.

I love reality TV. Some of the shows really suck, but others are amusing. I've always been a Survivor fan. I like the Rebel Billionaire (it's oh-so-scary!). And there was this really sweet one that came on before Alias where they redid people's homes (not the Fox one, the ABC one). Occassionally I'll watch the Real World, but not all the time. I like the host of Survivor and their reactions to each other. Being a psychology major, I like watching the different personalities conflict and how I would approach the situation were I to give therapy etc.
You also have to remember that we live in a country where "rags to riches" is the motto. We crave the average joe who gets turned into a star! It's actually quite motivational. Some of them, I agree, are WAY too extreme. And I don't really like how they're "taking over" TV, but I would hate for them to ALL go away. This new one by Fox, I agree, it's kind of disgusting when I saw the previews for it =/.

Real World? Bah.
You might be to young to remember this, but back in the day, VH1 and MTV used to play music videoes. Uninterupted videoes, no streaming 12 year old fan telling the viewership in the middle of the show how much she likes Justin Timberlake. But any time of the day, you could turn to either network and, by God, there'd be a video!

Bah, too young =P. Yes, I remember when they only showed videos. And I still agree that they don't show hardly ANY these days. But they do have MTV2 for that. I think their new stuff is more entertaining to an extent. It'd be nice if they showed more videos, but I'm not too sad that they're not ;).

Bah.
/me waves his paw dismissively
Not overly impressed the times I've watched MT2. They also seem to suffer from a deluge of worthless programming. Only time they seem to be playing videoes is in the early morning, and that's when I watch the news, not videoes.
However, I'll admit that flipping through to MT2 allowed me to discover Steriogram.
At times, I wouldn't mind having digital expanded cable or sat. tv, just for some of the "real" video channels available.
Real World? Bah.

I watch MTV when it first came on the air.
Trivia Question....
What was the first video played on MTV?

Although, all we really see in "reality TV" and "dating shows" is merely a group of people grubbing in front of the camera... usually for money or for their 15 minutes of fame... but the question is... is this "reality" or a camera induced delusion... is reality TV the mirror of America or the projection screen of greed and vanity?
Honestly, i think they are trying to find the next uber success... And the further they deteriorate into the "freakshow" realm... the further they will get from it.
From a psychological standpoint, is it really helpful to see people at their absolute worst to understand how to help them? I feel that reality TV is more of a I really wouldnt think so, but that's just me, and i'm just a silly engineering student....distortion of these people's reality and a means to an end to prove that people are really nothing more than money hungry idiots... and a chance to watch what someone is willing to do for money.

Reality TV needs to die. Damn you, <creator of survivor>, who started this fad.
Only stuff I watch nowadays = Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, CSI et al, Medical Investigation. NHL would be my top priority, but no dice.
Music is equally crap. Rarely listen to radio, only a few good new things come to mind (couple new U2 tracks, for instance). Christmas music for the past 2 months makes it even worse.
Do I sound jaded? Only 17 and I'm sick of pop culture.

MTV's Real World started Reality TV. That producer just took a huge show in England and made an American version. He's is the biggest reality TV producer today but wasn't the first.

Doc- I was referring to the "get a bunch of people together, make them do stupid stuff for a chance to win some money" type of reality shows. Really, sitcoms are more 'real' than 'reality' television.
"Which boyfriend is the daddy of your child?"
That would be The Maury Povich Show....also on Fox...at least here.
Video Killed the Radio Star... everyone knows that.
Who are t"The Buggles Alex" (First vid shown on MTV BTW)
