Does anyone have food allergies? In our home liquid milk (cheese is ok) and soy are banned due to food allergies and lactose intollerance with the kids.

I has been interesting learning how to cook without soy and milk. But it beats having Nathan in the ER or having a feeding tube with elemental formula.

I was wondering if anyone else had food allergies and how they cope with them?

No allergies here.

Onions do not suck, what an idiotic statement. If you cooked something other than Hamburger Helper maybe you'd use them.

onions are one of the most versatile cooking ingredients. i love them sometimes, and hate them others. talk about versatility.

Same.

An ex of mine is allergic to celery, and one of his relations (uncle, I think) is allergic to peach fuzz. He couldn't eat most canned soups and had to make most from scratch himself.

Allergic to peach fuzz? Does that mean he couldn't date mexicans?

Allergic to some fresh fruits (apples, cherries, pears). They make my throat swell up, get itchy and make me want to vomit. But the same fruits in other forms (juice, cooked desserts, etc...), I'm fine with. Strange.

I guess I am allergic to Guava?? Atleast that is what I am told.

I haven't really run across anything, so I don't think I'm allergic.

My mom can't do straight milk in a glass, but she can have some with her coffee or a little bit with cereal. Also, she loves cheese. I think I have a little bit of that 'cause I feel bad if I have too much milk, but I can still drink a glass every once in a while.

I was lactose intolerant for 10 years, then it cleared up. Hurrah!

I'm in the same boat. Seems any vegie or fruit in the "raw" or undercooked causes me to have a reaction.

My ex would some time break out if she ate seafood. She could it the same thing two different times, and one time will break out and the over nothing, never found out what it was. Assuming some sort of seasoning.

Sounds like you could possibly have a mild case of what Nathan has. It is called Eoinsophillic Esophagitis.

I can't drink milk on its own, I have to mix in some sugar or something. Otherwise I get really sick...painfully sick.

I also technically can't eat greasy food as I have a hard time digesting it, but I love barbecuing and eating barbecue :)

Doubt it's EE since the on-set is so late. Get some OTC Tagamet or Pepsid and see if that helps.

that is not necessarily true. it can have an onset at any age.

No no not what I meant at all. It's certainly possible ;it just usually manifests itself at a much younger age.People that get it at an older age are more likely to have it brought on by reflux;younger onset is more allergic oriented.

Yeah, I noticed it as a little kid but didn't realize the reactions I was having were allergic until I was a teen. Nice to know my problem has a name though, thanks Kamie! :-)

It is called EE for short. It is an evil pain in the ass thing to live with.

But no, it has nothing to do with you.

i've been scoped twice and neither one was a negative experience. then again, i had a really good attitude about all the tests that they had to run on me as a kid, so i wasn't afraid. i just went with the flow.

i just feel bad for my mom. she basically lost years off her life worrying about me as a kid. no wonder me moving away for college was harder than my brother!

don't be so afraid for your kids kamie...

if they see you in a state of panic, they will be in a state of panic :) so be happy, and they will be too!

as for keeping all milk and soy out of the house, isn't that a bit extreme? i mean, just because Nathan (and zoe?) cant have it doesn't mean it must be annihilated does it? i assume they cant help themselves to the fridge.

Any child over the age of 18 months can pretty much help themselves to anything not nailed down. After 2 years, they pull nails out too. I've watched Zoe take down a baby gate before.

Blue,

Nathan has literally stopped breathing because of soy reactions. For him, they are life threatening. I would rather keep it out of the house than have him die.

I do not run around in a state of panic. I am concerned about the next scope because it could mean he would not be able to eat food by mouth if the results are bad. That is something rather scary for anyone to deal with and a major life-altering thing. I would not have a heart of be a decent parent if I wasn't concerned about that.

invictus86,

The scopes are not negative for him. They are done under general anesthesia.

allergies are a bizarre thing Kamie I would say have Nathan tested every 5 - 7 yrs. as kids grow the reactions in the body changes and they can out grow them or the severity can increase. I myself have had both types. There are certain medicines that use to throw me into shock, but now my body can handle ( aspirin and penicillin ) but food wise I have gotten worse. I am allergic to shrimp, but it used to be only touching them, after cooked I was fine, while in Florida I had a Lobster claw, something I had had just 1 month prior and went into anafaltic shock. Lactose is another my reaction to it is sever stomach cramping.

BTW being a chef in new england and not being able to handle shellfish SUCKS !!!

OMG! I know that family!

When Nate was at the hospital, they are the family who had grandma give him a cup of milk to "test" what would happen.

He wound up hospitalized because he puked so much he got dehydrated.

He was there for a day durring that stay but he and Nathan played together a lot in the play room on our floor.

I was lucky enough to outgrow two allergies of foods I love, watermelon, and shrimp.

I'm lactose intolerant if I don't have milk for a couple months, but it's nothing bad... just the runs.
