View Full Version : PIZZA HUT SUCKS
I order pizza, 3 mediums, and they dont have the dough they use for that size pizza. How do you not have dough for all sizes of pizza? Its mind boggling.

Easily. Papa Johns was doing just fine one holiday yet both Dominoes and Pizza Hut had run out of dough because they were being badly managed and didn't plan ahead for the holiday. You think they make the dough locally at each store? ha, no! They get a shipment in every few days, but it has to last until a day after the next shipment so it has time to rise/set/whatever.
And no, you can't just use a large dough to make a medium or small pizza. I think.

I work for a national chain called Mazzio's, and I do dough-prep. All our dough is made fresh daily and portioned out, and we always anticipate busier days and make the appropriate amount of dough.
Usually, that's between 250 and 300 pounds on a weekend day.

Why would you even walk into Pizza Hut? Such a crappy establishment!
Local mom and pop pizza places are 10,000 times better. Maybe it's a northeastern thing, but I usually denote Pizza Hut/Papa Johns/etc patrons as people who don't have good taste or they would be eating at a much better place. So if you go into one of those places, I don't think you have a right to complain, it is trash, expect crappy service, and sub-par meals.

except that you can order online, pay with a credit card, and get the shit delivered to your door for cheap. all of the online deals they have make 10 dollar large pizzas an everyday occurence. it's not going to be a spectacular pizza-like meal, but you're going to have cheap decent food that you didn't have to move for.
I haven't actually been INSIDE a pizza hut, since, like, junior high.

I don't mind Pizza Hut that much, though I'll take a Chicago pan pizza over it any day.
It's weird that they wouldn't just give you a large at the medium price. That's what most places will do to keep customers if they **** up. I went to a gas station once that ran out of regular and wasn't expecting more in for a few hours. They gave away premium at regular's price. That's how it should be done.

You would think they would offer me something else, but all they said to me was "so, what do you want to do" as in are you going to order something else.
I dont expect a large of a medium, since i was getting 3 mediums for 15 bucks, but they could of offered me something, maybe 2 larges for 15. But as my dad told me, "its pizza hut, they dont have to worry about repeat business, because they know you will probably come back any way"
i go to pizza hutt buffet at least once a week
i love that for lunch. its 6 bucks all you can eat pizza and breadsticks. seriously who wouldn't eat that.

I managed a Dominos in high school and college. There's two possibilities:
Pizza hut has "pro-molded" dough for all their sizes. They don't actually stretch or toss the dough.
Pizza hut is morons.
Dominos:
Hand tossed dough all came in wads. If you ran out of medium wads, you can just take a large wad and cut a chunk off.
Thin crust came packaged like pita bread.
Thick crust came pre-molded/packaged.

2nd best, but the best within the 15 miles of my parents' until you actually get into Chicago. I like Gino's better.
Pizza Works in Peoria actually has good pan pizza. I didn't think that was possible south of I-80.

i don't understand why national chains are so lazy with the dough. seriously, just make it fresh every day. it's so much better that way.

cheap? making it is cheaper, i guarantee you. it's about convenience for national chains.
when i make dough there are three ingredients. hot water (105-108F), a dough packet (which is a little pouch, which we have three - thin, original, and deep), and soy oil to prevent hardening and make the dough malleable.
the "problem" is that dough has to be made very early and allowed to proof before it can be rolled out and cut in the pans. that's my entire job though. my shift starts at 7am. i make about 5 batches and then portion/weigh out every single ball for deep pan, pan it, and let it proof. by that time the original has risen and i roll that out, pan it, cut it, and rack it. normally a lunch crowd kills about 2 racks (each of medium and large) at 15 pizzas per rack. i normally build to 4 racks (each) before 5pm for the night shift.
all of this is in addition to thin pizzas, which are rolled to order all day.
buffet thins (mediums) are rolled out every weekday morning. that's 7 racks standard, 8 on fridays.

If every thing is pre made in a facorty, thats one less person to hire to make the stuff. Having a machien that does it all if usauly cheaper then having people doing it.

i ordered a pizza hut the other day. first time ive had pizza hut in over 10 years or so. bleh it was horrible. i attributed it to me being sick and unable to smell anything. but i think the pizza just sucked. i got one of those cheesy crusts. i had a coupon. bad idea. worst pizza ever. im gonna order 1 more because i like the pan pizza crust. i did in 1996 anyway i hope its still good.

yeah but the refridgerated/freezer trucks and transportation across the U.S.? that, plus the fact that factories have to have some sort of quality assurance with a human on the line...somewhere. i guess even if they're equal in cost, making it fresh definitely wins. i've eaten both kinds of dough and even the most retarded customer can tell the difference.

If I get mass marketed pizza, I always order thin crust from Dominos. Very good. Otherwise, I try to find / go to a real italian joint.

It is good, but i perfer the deep dish (even though its like a dollar extra) from there or the hand toss because its more filling.

I think it's about consistency. Pizza Hut wants you to know that the pizza you are buying is exactly the same as the pizza you can buy at the Pizza Hut across town, across the state, or across the country. It helps with the brand identity.

all the dough packets are the same at every mazzio's restaurant in the country, so i don't see much of a difference here.

Because Pizza Hut, as well as many of the other large chain pizza vendors (LaRosa's in particular) get their dough from foodservice vendors daily or every other day, in prepackaged sizes (M, L, XL), along with the rest of their order (cheese, sauce, veggies, napkins, oil, etc.)
I know this because I worked for US Foodservice for six months.
My favorite thing in the world would be when the LaRosa's roll boxes would break open in the freezer, and we'd have a free-for-all throwing all the frozen dough up into the big 120-inch blowers and watch them shoot back out at ninety miles per hour.
Even the worst job in the world, you can find something to like about it.
Except maybe a proctologist. But maybe the money makes it worth it.

I love Mazzio's, but the closest one (20-30mins. away) doesn't deliver to my area. Every time we make an order though, something bad happens. One time some idiot tried to deliver to our house and couldn't find it, and he didn't realize the pizza would be cold before he could find the house. The other times they got the order wrong. It is just bad management for that establishment I guess. The next closest one is about 45mins. away, but I am not sure how well that one runs.

the only problem with mazzio's is that they offer franchises as well as running corporate stores. there's usually a marked difference between the two, despite their best efforts.
