View Full Version : postcount++;

The thread opened by a forum regular complaining about postwhoring was deleted by said user, apparently. Action has been taken regardless.

Post counts are now only visible to forum administrators. If you aren't such, profiles and the memberlist will show '0' posts for everyone.

People are just jealous.

I say we make it so the postcount gets randomly generated every day, to further emphasis how meaningless it is.

Aww... look at thri. He's jealous too.

This reminds me of a parable...

Thank you, hopefully this will quell the pw'ing!

Really? You think so? You think the people who are postwhoring aren't exceedingly cogniscent of their post-total?

Postcount show others how active you are in the community, now we have nothing. heh

Why are you essentially going out of your way to annoy me? I like you Canon, but you know I hate postwhoring, so I don't know why you're making a big noise about this. Its obviously been a problem of late and I wouldn't have thought of you as a postwhore advocate.

Play nice, ferret. I'm giving sk crap because he was giving me crap. Now that the crap has been passed around, we can stop.

Be Happy.

The non-special posting ranks are still unaffected. Granted, only administrators know what number postings get you which rank. :)

Moderators still have access to postcounts, as well as other statistics regarding activity. This information can still be used to determine whether members meet the requirements for any administrative positions. I can think of no other reason for comparing postcounts with anyone else. You are still free to post as excessively as you like in the relavant forums. The only difference is that now there is no reason to try and "catch up" with anyone by posting totally meaningless things. Even the endless flamewars or gay love-ins are still going to be there, except now they will be there because thats what people want to say, not because they have a number to attain.

ferret

Actually, Moderators currently can't see postcounts, only the 3 forum administrators. I may change that though. But the rest of your post is dead on. There is no longer a number to compete for.

The memberlist can still be accurately sorted by postcount. even though it displays zero.

Sure there is, the rank when sorted.

Oops. I put in the code to fix that but forgot to remove the post sort options from the non-admin branch. Fixed.

this is a bit off topic, but since were talking about the way the phbb looks like... i was on one for asp code etc. and on that site they had the ability to set and "online" and an "offline" avatar. which was really cool... cause someone had a sheep, and when they went offline, they sheep was on its side.. .asleep. too funny... any chance we might be able to do that here? im no even sure if you have seen it or not..

if your interested, ill see if i can find some of the code that controls it :)

let me know (sorry this is off topic).

ASP sucks, but its easily possible in PHPBB. The basic code is easy, you'd just add a check in the view profile and view thread code to check for the post's user in the session table. The time consuming part is adding all the code to handle the second avatar, you have to go through and add it to all the profile editing, registration, new user, adding it to the MySQL tables, etc.

no ferret, it wasnt in asp, it iwas in php. however, the site was all about asp. lemme see if ic an dig up the code. it was a phpbb script... :)

Canon

It's undoubtedly cool. The only people who might be opposed to it are likely those people who would have to code it. Those are the opinions that matter.

how about. no posting allowed.

Set a limit of 10 posts per hour.
I don't think this will be necessary. The idea is not to prevent people from posting copiously. If that is what they want to do, and they feel they have something to say, then that is ok. The idea is to prevent people from posting merely to compete over postcounts, which encourages contentless posts and argument over who is postwhoring and who is not.

Everyone knows that Ferret I are untouchable in the sheer volume of posts that we have each contributed. I'm arguably a postwhore, but I think I'm on topic for the most part... despite trolling the forums all day.

I don't know. One might consider a reply like yours an indication of "caring".

Also, "quality" is inferred simply through mention of either ferret's name or my own. Okay, enough on this thread.

Exeunt...

i suppose you could say that.

just as saying that a comment like this:
Everyone knows that Ferret I are untouchable in the sheer volume of posts that we have each contributed.
sounds as if it does matter that you have the most posts (thus promoting the post whoring).

then you add:
Also, "quality" is inferred simply through mention of either ferret's name or my own. Okay, enough on this thread.

gg buttkisser / cocky bastard. are you seriosly suggesting that everything you say is "quality" lmao. you made my day :)

Canon

Yes, blue. I'm mean that all my posts are of relevant substance to the topic of the thread. Come on now. When I say "all" do I really mean every last post down to the nitty gritty? No, of course not. But I'd like to think that a good 80% of my posts are somewhat on target. Is that a fair estimate?

... and I was joking about the quality part too. Damn it, blue! You're supposed to know this about me!

ferret

All of my posts are relevant quality information needed for your day to day existance.

Death of a thread. Alas, we hardly reached page 3.
