Was any one crazy enough to buy this game this week? My husband and his buddies at work bought it the day it came out. He said they were standing in line at the local Best Buy and he said there had to of been like 5 guys buying it. That's without including the other lines that guys were buying this game. He said if someone wanted to bomb the place they would take out a buy of nerd in one bang, lol. Anyway, I wanted to know who has the game so maybe we can try it out.

I've heard its basicly BF1942, a little buggier, a little jitterier, with a Star Wars theme, and shitacular (I love that word) AI

i played it at a friends house, it was pretty good, just clumsy feeling. the only reason one would buy it is to play it online since the single player is a good hour long or so to finish

I bought it, and like it a lot more than bf1942. I like pretty much every Star Wars game, so I'm a little biased. It runs a hell of a lot smoother on my computer, but the graphics aren't quite as good as they could be.

You get to play pretty much every major battle from all 6 movies, from any side and have access to almost any vehicle in the movies. That was enough to convince me to buy it!

I've played it for all my free time in almost a week, and it has been a lot of fun so far. I haven't seen any bugs or any problems with the AI. All the maps are cool and nicely done, the models blend in a bit too much on for me on 3 of them though.

Haven't tried it online or even checked to see how many servers there are out there, so I don't know how the net code is.

Hmmm this is a Net game first, with single player bolted on at the last moment to stave off reviews that slate it for no single player.

I'm waiting for a demo before I commit.

Tim, my husband is the same way with the Star Wars stuff, I am as well to a point. If you don't like BF1942, you might like BFNam. I like that one more than I do 1942. But it is very cool to be able to try out all the stuff in the Battlefront for sure.

ive seen the previews on TV... really it looks like just a skinned version of Joint Operations.. (or perhaps its the other way, JO is a skinned version of this).

doesnt really matter i suppose.
either way i have NS , JO, COD:UO and i dont have time !! :(

General conclusion of above is that its a good game, especially for Star Wars fans, but no replacement for BFV or Joint Ops.

Watch the Video review at gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/starwarsbattlefront/index.html) to find out more about Battlefronts. Gamerankings.com, the best place to find the "general conclusion" about a game since they average out reviews of games from websites on a weighted scale, give Battlefront a 79% (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/919277.asp) and give Battlefield Vietnam an 84% (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/915255.asp?q=battlefield). Considering Battlefield is a 6 months older to me the general conclusion is the games are pretty even.

I'd guess if you like Star Wars go Battlefront. If you like real guns go Battlefield.

Lol, I haven't seen that. The main reason I'd get the game is for the Hoth battle. Still one of my favorite scenes in any movie. I really gotta get the trilogy DVDs.

No monthly fee. It's not a persitent world and I beleive servers are communty based, just like COD/CS/BF1942.

ahh then this game meets my requirements. i have personally decided i wouldnt buy / play a game that requires a monthly fee... i just dont like the idea of having to buy a game for 50 bucks, then pay 15 or so a month to play it...

GG if HL cost that much, id be broke!

Only persistant world games charge money, and despite how much it might sting, they really do have to charge monthly in order to run those games. Granted, they probably price gouge and charge far more than they have to, but they buy like $100,000 servers to run games like Everquest and such from, then the maintenance costs, technicians, bandwidth, etc, etc.

blue
09-27-2004, 02:33 PM
i understand why they do it...
in a sense its no different than anyone here donating money to you or spurty. were just not forced to send a monthly fee.

i just dont like the idea they way it was pitched from them. id rather donate to you as i feel its necessary (or available).

my XMradio gets a higher ranking than any online game would :/

Persistent worlds like EverQuest need to be run by the company. You need huge servers that thousands can play on at once that are just impossible for people like spurty and ferret to run. That and you need to prevent cheating as much as possible, a RPG that takes months to get a good character would be ruined if people cheating could do it in a day. Show me the company that would say, "Hey people, just donate money as you see fit for server cost. No biggie if we make money or not." To ask a company to take donations for a service in most cases is foolish and bad buisness.

Anyone know Guild War's buisness structure? I have no clue how that game will remain afloat without a monly fee.

They plan to sell content to meet costs. I'm not sure how well that's going to do for them, unless they make a LOT of content, like an expansion pack every two months or something, and keep the quality high enough that players want to keep buying.

I also believe they plan to utilize advertisements somehow.

I'm real curious to see how Guild Wars does. If guild wars turns out to be as good as EQ II, WoW, or any other top tier MMORPG I hope it does well and stays free. If not though I hope it fails because of it's buisness structure. Having a half assed MMORPG that is free is just gonna make forum wars about monthly prices to annoying.

Yeah, that map is fun. I like running around on the Ton-Tons. Oh yeah, you can take out the AT-ATs with the tow cable on the snow speeders. It's funny because you fly around it like 20 times before they fall. Other than that, the AT-ATs are pretty much unstopable ownage.

The gameplay is pretty much the exact same as BF42 and nam. If you like that sort of game you would like this, I just like it better because it is star wars!

Spurty, the LucasArts site for the game says "PC Demo Coming Soon".

I'll wait for the demo also.

Hoth is one of my favorite battle scenes in the whole Star Wars universe as well.

How's the battle droid? Ever since I saw one of those I was like, whoa.

Athena

that will be for ferret and spurty to decide if there will or can be one. Interesting thought though. GUYS?!?

I'm not sure if Battlefront is actually based off the BF1942 engine or not, but BF1942 is a heavy CPU user, probably one of the heaviest servers out there. Spurty may have the resources to host it but I'm current very much tapped out on CPU resources.

With the new found activeness of the CS 1.6 server, and with CSS being released next week, we're gonna be running on the edge on slinky (My server). jester (spurty's server) may be able to handle it.

I don't think it uses the BF42 engine. But, I finally tried it online last night and I was not at all happy with how laggy it was. I don't know what my ping was, because the scoreboard didn't want to pop up for me. So, I don't know if the problem was me, the server, or the netcode.

I'll try again, but it was hard to find a low ping server that wasn't full or have 2 people on it.

From what I know, Battlefront is not ran on the same engine, due to the fact that LucasArts are the makes, and they are rather keep themselves from the others. But I can do some looking around for you at the moment and check it out.

Is Star Wars Battlefront (http://www.lucasarts.com/games/swbattlefront/) using the same engine from an existing game?
No, the engine for Star Wars Battlefront is a brand new engine developed by Pandemic Studios.

Here is your answer to that question.
