I've installed a mod into the registeration panel that requires the user to enter the text depicted in the little graphical box. I'm sure you've seen it before if you've ever registered for any big time sites. This will hopefully defer the bots that has been posting russian advertisement sites.

Random usernames with nothing but a webpage, false email, etc.

Stuff like 'jewelry.ru' and crap. The last one was something about flowers.

What are they accomplishing by setting up these usernames and not posting anything?

Nothing, and everything.

"They" aren't signing up, as far as I can tell. Its a robot that sits there and scans for PHPBB (And probably other forums), and if it finds it registers an account. They never activate it or anything, but they get shown as the most recent "new user", with their name or webpage containing their advertisements.

I imagine if you do this to several thousand forums, you'd likely get some hits.
