When I was growing up I watched Battletech all the time. WHen I got to be a teenager I lvoed Akira. I accually have had thoughts about Akira as a live action movie. It would probably suck but it could be amazing.

So with Akira and Battletech in mind is there an Anime you'd recomend to me? I don't really like DragonBall Z stuff.

Do you like more serious, or some comedy?

If SOME comedy is okay.. Nadesico is great. Its all about big robots and space ships and such. Vandread was also cool, again with lots of comedy though.

Outlaw Star is a great sci-fi space anime, some comedy but in general a serious tone.

You'd probably like Bleach, but there is some fighting that might remind you of DBZ. Its about spirits, to be blunt. The fight between the Death Gods (Good) and the Hollows (Bad) to protect people's souls. Rough synapse.

Tenchi has lots of space stuff but its pure comedy.

Cowboy Bebop is space, very cool anime, fairly serious. Kinda.. Not sure. Its two about two freelancers, a former cop and a former mob guy.

Trigun is a sci-fi anime about the remanents of humanity on another planet, after everything went wrong with the colonization and they were all stranded on a desert planet, slowly loosing all their technology. Some comedy, lots of guns, no DBZ. Some very serious themes about violence/war/peace in it.

There's tons more, those are some off the top of my head that are favorites.

Well I like serious and comedy. I don't like Eastern philosphy serious thought or slapstick comedy. Seeing a cartoon kicked int eh nads just doesn't do it for me. I know Akira can be considered Eastern Philosphy serious but I also read the comic for that so maybe that is why I loved it so much.

I love Sci-Fi and am a minor Treekie so maybe an Anime like that would be cool.

I just watched the Street FIghter II Anime and it sucked.

Anything by Macross, Macross Plus, Macross Zero. Nadesico, Godannar if you want a comedic homage to the giant robot genre.

Maybe Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Neon Genesis is comedy-free stick to the story. Not really "space' though.

Blue Sub 6 is an EXCELLENT 4-part anime.

Based on religious mythology? Yeah... Conveying a religious message? Hmmmms.. Not so much. Disturbing? Quite. I always considered it a little overrated.

Maybe so, but after going to a friends house and falling asleep while watching it all the way through a SECOND time, including the movie, has made me vow to NEVER watch it ever again.

cowboy Bebpop
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Akira

I'd also like to emphasize Trigun for its awsome comedy with some tones of seriousness.

lets all face it; Shinji is emo

Eva is ok, if a bit over-rated...maybe if the ending was better (like the movies) then people would of liked it a bit more. I always like the characters myself, they all have some kinda major dysfunction.

Outlaw Star is another good starting series. Similar to Cowboy Bebop to an extent, but not as serious.

I agree here, and as I told you about yesterday and as Thri noted, watch Macross Plus. The dubbed version of Macross Plus is also one of the few well done dubbings.

Give Ghost in the Shell a shot too. The movie that is....I havn't watched the Standalone Complex series.

The original Macross Series is good too, but it can get rather long, and occasionally drawn out.

If you want Gundam, see if you can get your hands on a series called Stardust Memory. One of the better Gundam mini-series (is only like 14 episodes or something).

You shouldn't restrict yourself to one particular style:

El Hazard (fantasy adventure, one of the best dubs ever too)
Full Metal Alchemist
Full Metal Panic (mecha action, but the Fumuffo series arc is the best)
Ghost in the Shelll: Stand Along Complex (complex political and tech drama)
Read or Die
Scrapped Princess (great fantasy series)

Requires intimate knowledge of Japanese culture and anime genres though, but absolutely hilarious:
Azumanga Daioh (school life)
Dokkaida (super heroes and their secret identities)
Keroro Gunso (Sgt. Frog)
Genshiken (about fans and obsessions, it hurts because its true)

I wouldn't touch those last four that Thri mentioned if you're new to anime. I'll add to his list Excel Saga. Its not for a "beginner".

Excel Saga will make u silly, just like FLCL. But if you watch Cowboy Bebop and like the type of art used in it then watch Samurai Champloo too.

Ghost in the Shelll: Stand Along Complex (complex political and tech drama)I'd have to disagree there thri. It's not all that good.

Here's a few that aren't Sci-Fi but are still good to watch.

Rurouni Kenshin - 95 Episode TV Series. I havn't seen all of it,but what I saw I liked. It's basically about a Samurai who vows to never kill again and tries to start a new life. His past eventaully catches up with him. A few movies spawned from it, but I'm not 100% sure how well they tie in to the TV series.

Princess Mononoke - One of my favourite all time animated movies. The dubbing was done very well and for the American version they used some notable actors (Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Billy Bob Thornton).

Record of Lodoss War - Another fantasy style series. It's a tad older (1990) but its still pretty good. Very Lord of the Rings-esque. It sapwned a second series called Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight (1998) but I never saw that series so I can't comment on it.

ferret

On the note of Princess Mononoke: Howl's Walking Castle and Spirited Away, as well as Castle in the Sky, are all directed by the same guy, and all excellent.

IF your looking for pure comedy then I suggest you go with Cromarti High

Each episode is only 15 mins long but is friggen histerical. It constantly makes fun of itself and its characters. What I think is the greaest part about it is that the animation is serious looking but the rest of the show is definetly not serious at all

Last I checked the topic was recommend some Anime to Doc, not list Anime for Zantas' personal approval.

For someone so opinionated on the subject, take a step off the soapbox and list some that you DO like to help Doc out.

You can dowload an entire series depending on how recent it is, how popular it is too. Older more obscure series are extremly hard to find. Let alone download.

Torrents are fickle things. Gotta get the seeds.

Doc Wattson
04-27-2006, 10:20 PM
Torrents don't work for me because of my ISP. I am doing a DL over IRC and I have to restart it every 5 minutes manually.

SUcks to say the least.

Unless Trigun rocks I doupt I'll go through this two hours of baby sitting a DL again for another episode.

Doc, the episode probably has sound but your computer doesn't have the audio codec.

Download and install this:

Get the full version and try it again.

SkifF
04-28-2006, 08:54 AM
Doc, check around, there HAS to be a store somewhere around where you live that rents out Anime.

Also if you have any interest in Gundam, I suggest checking out the Gundam site: http://www.gundamofficial.com/
The problem with the Gundam stuff is that there are multiple series taking place in different universes. For example:

The original Mobile Suit Gundam (the one that started it all) takes place in "Universal Century" timeline; where as Gundam Wing takes place in the "After Colony" Timeline. So although they are both Gundam, they have absolutly nothing to do with each other.

That website will help you piece together which series and which movies fall under which timeline.

Try downloading VLC media player. It works a guaranteed 99% of the time. Windows Media player classic also works wonders. And get the Lazy Man codec pack. It works wonders. Also try XviD and DivX codecs.

ferret
04-28-2006, 10:24 AM
Talon... The K-Lite Codec pack contains all of those. Every version of DivX (3,4,5), Xvid, DirectShow, OGM, etc.

Talon Karrde
04-28-2006, 10:27 AM
Then go download what ferret syas to download. I'm not up to date with these Codecs sicne I dled them seperately ages ago. But I do have Quick time, BS player, Windows Media player classic, Winamp, Windows media player, Real Time all on my comp. I use them all for different Anime's. For dual audio ones I tend to use window media player. I got BS player For the Advent children movie. Etc.. etc. Oh yes if anyone wants a series come ask em I may have it. And I could mail it to you.

ferret
04-28-2006, 10:28 AM
Wow Talon :/ Your computer probably hates you. I used to keep all that stuff until I found the K-Lite pack. Now its the only thing I have, and it opens everything you said.

Well, I still have trusty old Winamp 2.76

Winamp I find is the worst of the programs for Watching. I find the best to be Either BS or WMC. Those two never fail. I'm thinking abotu VLC. But since my winamp is a bitch and makes it so all video files are open through it. Even though I change it so it's not it still overides me and resets. Oh well. I'm use to it by now.

So thanks to Ferret and Saitn I just watched Trigun episode #1. I liked it a lot. Found it interesting how the dubbed text and the voice over didn't match on more then a handful of occasions.

-Gary-

ferret
04-28-2006, 05:25 PM
That's a common problem and one of the main reasons I don't like dubs. Its a trouble with any language conversion. Some langauges just say SO MUCH MORE in a few words than say, English does. So they have to cut it up or simplify it as much as possible to try to match the character's mouth movements or fit the time when the character is shown talking.

Subtitled, the translator can put the full meaning of the original language.

Fruits Basket is pretty good, I recommend both the anime and the manga, cause the anime has some big things missing.

Samurai Champloo is rally good too, with Full Metal Alchemist, Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, and Case Closed, if you like mysteries.

Talon Karrde

Lemming. It's hard to comapre Anime to Manga because of the censorship laws. They are very different. So the authors can add mostly (whatever they want) So if you liked a series on TV best idea is to check out the manga because the anime most likely was born form it.

True, but mainly the manga is better in my opinion because it's longer, something over 100 books, whereas the show is like, 20 episodes. Some characters got cut, maybe some censorship as you said, but some large plot parts got the axe for no reason. Yeah, I wanna get that manga, but I'm poor as hell. I hasve no job yet.
