hmm, it appears that what ferret thought was a limit is actually just the forum resizing it automatically to 80px.

ferret, you should put an if statement: only resize if its larger than 80 in the first place :P

Does it have to be a gif. Because for some reason my gif file of the same photo is 10 kb, while the jpeg is only 5.7 and looks better.

It doesn't HAVE to be a gif. JPG is for still images and uses a different compression. GIF is really for animated images, and really should be used only when necessary. PNG is a newer replacement for GIF that you should use if you need animations. JPG for still image, PNG for animated. rgr.

yeah, the avatars should only be resized when they are larger than the limit. if they are within the limit to begin with, they shouldnt be enlarged ;P

Is this the way it's gonna stay? I had to resize my already pixellated avatar to fit within the 120x120 parameters. It worked fine in the fcs forums.

the requirements for the avatars are different here. They must be no bigger than 6k and smaller dimensions too. If you want something bigger you have to link it to a website that has your avatar on it.

Why was the remote linking removed? I certainly would cause any load on your server and my webserver won't notice the extra few hits now and then.

It's the web client that pulls in the images not the server :-( The server only has the http:// link so the server has nothing to do with it.

yeah, the web client pulls the image, but the server that hosts the image can also see where it was reffered from. If the host doesnt want you to be linking images, he can come here and bitch about it. The only way to avoid that is to post a url not as a link, and have people open a new browser and paste it in.

Remote linking was disabled to better enforce image sizing. To avoid having to do a lot of extra work checking remote avatars, this saves the server a lot of processing. Ie, a basic check against your remote avatar when you add it to your profile doesn't work because you could then upload a larger version, and the forums wouldn't recheck it.

The only other option would be to check remote avatar's for size EVERY time they're displayed. Waste of CPU, so I just turned it off.

Plus, it avoids people linking off sites they don't own.
