I've always found the subject interesting, but have never gotten around to doing a more indepth study. I don't find the idea impossible that, there have been a lot of secret societies in the history of Europe (And the world at large)

Someone has been reading too much Dan Brown.
Its possible they did exist, but the odds of such a society surviving in secret for hundreds are years are so slim as to be nonexistant.

Okay, here was my lame attempt at a google search: http://www.prolognet.qc.ca/clyde/illumin.htm
Uhm. Right. Maybe it was just the "article" that I came up with (I really didn't care for the first two websites I hit), but that has to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. That's about as lame as thinking that we're puppets in someone else's universe and they control everything that we do like a video game (which is actually what I used to believe as a kid to get out of trouble - ha!). We as individuals have the responsibility of our own actions.

how can you say it is that far fetched of an idea? its like the govenrnment runs your life and someone behind the curtin is controlling the government.

Theres another article. The New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia is one of the best online references I've found for anything to do with religion.
The Illuminati did, at one point, exist. There is documentation about their founder creating the organization and it spreading.
It didn't last very long, and its real goals were never all that clear, as it was a secret political society.
Since so little is known about it, its a favorite of conspiracy theorists who like to say that you can't find any information on it because it is still in existence and its members keep anyone from publishing information.

On topic, please...Ahem... sorry.
I have often wondered if such a thing exists. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between factual information and paranoia. Shows like the X-Files (had to make the reference) are based on both facts and fiction - obviously.
I could see how it might be possible that there is some sort of 'rogue element' in the Gov't - whether local or global - at work trying to influence things. But I doubt that it is as far reaching as some of these web sites, like Illuminati-news (http://www.illuminati-news.com/) try to convince us of. No doubt, these are very intelligent and very rich people. But certainly there are equally intelligent and equally wealthy people who will not want to fall in line with their 'evil schemes'.

Back to the topic... Honestly, if we havent heard of the secret society, they probably dont exist... we live in a world of whistleblowers where not even a top secret at the highest levels of the white house and pentagon can be kept for more than a few days... information always leaks, and questions are always asked. It's hard to conduct a secret society without there being some hard evidence of it's existance out there... no matter how fun it is to speculate about these things for novels and computer games... it probably is more fiction than fact.
