Scorpion

Right now, I can't play at all. I open the game and anytime I try to join a server it just hangs up on me and won't even let me alt tab out to something else or close the program without simply rebooting my comp <and I mean hard reboot ::shudders::>
My specs currently are 900 mhz amd, 768 sdr ram, radeon 9000 pro 128
Also I'm looking to build a new comp and want it to be able to play doom3 and hl2/cs2. So if anyone can give me suggestions on building one for as cheap as humanly possible I'd be most thankful for that as well.

its not necesarilly your computer. that same thing happens to me every other time i play css/ like for instance i changed my video settings in game and it crashed. if i play again now without logging out of steam and logging back in 1 of 2 things will happen.
i will connect and play normally
or
my game will crash and the image will be stuck on screen and i wont be able to see anything except the loading screen and i have to reboot.

Yes, I'm able to run it on a p3 930mhz, gf4mx 420 64mb, 512ram but its on the lowest resolution and all graphic settings are on low or off. The game only runs at 4-20fps which is more than I expected. (I didnt think I'd be able to run it at all)

there should be a way to up playability by upping some cache settings for memory [you got 512]. i use this technique for some UT2003/4 based games.
command should be something dealing with cachemegs. this way it allocates pc memory to other things [like textures, etc] and lets more room for the gfx card memory to load other stuff

in Americas Army, a UT2003 based game, you can open up a config file, and change the command perameter :
"CacheSizeMegs=32" (under ArmyOps.ini >open w/ notepad > [Engine.GameEngine]
to whatever you wish. Since i have 2 sticks of 256, totaling 512 ram, i upped the cache size to 128. That way, it'll use up your CPU memory for some textures, and other visual goodies, so it wont work your video card up too much. Then, with your 64mb on your GF4, it can be used for the other effects, such as the flashbang effect, other little game details such as sprites loading, and other ingame / visual artifacts.
i've boosted my FPS in AA from an average 15-20 [some special forces maps] to 20-30.
go check to see if there are any config files or somtehing for source. and see if that's possible.
//edit : i just checked my UT2004 Files, under UT2004 > System, there's a file called "Default.ini" which you can change it too.
maybe CS:S has an option you gotta look for. allocate some PC memory.
